Chapter 2 - Troubles of the Heart

I walked toward the benches in the cafeteria with my nutella and strawberry jelly sandwich and Dr. Pepper. Faye was nowhere to be seen so I took a seat at one of the empty tables.

After a few minutes of eating in silence, I sensed someone approaching me from behind. Before I could glance back to see who the mysterious stranger was, the smell of cologne filled my nostrils and a voice that always made me catch my breath filled the air.

"Is this seat taken Hun?"

"No no, go right ahead!" I tried to slow my breathing.

A body slid next to me and instantly warmth spread all throughout me. "So how's life?" Shawn opens his brown paper bag.

"It's ok I guess. I just moved here from the U.S." I shrug.

"Oh I've been there before! What part? Wait no no, let me guess..... by the look of your clothes, I'd say either New York, California or Florida," he puts on a puzzled face.

"You're right," I reply laughing, "I'm a Cali girl. L.A. to be exact."

"Ha! I knew it. I've been there a few times," he nods his head.

"Of course you have, you're famous! You've been all over the world!" I noticed his body tense when I said "famous".

"I wouldn't call myself famous," he clinches his jaw.

"Oh... well," there was an awkward silence for a while.

"So Lily," Shawn cleared his throat, "How are you liking Canada?"

"It's beautiful, I really do love it! It's definitely different than what I'm used to though."

He chuckled, "In what way?"

"Well the weather's cooler at the moment. Usually at this time of year it's in the 90s or 100s. But here it seems to be 58 degrees," I rubbed my arm.

We sat in silence, just enjoying each other's company.  "Since you're new here," Shawn wiped his mouth, "I'm gonna show you around, come on!"

I was hesitant, "Wait but we aren't supposed to leave since we're on lunch break!"

"Shhhh we'll be back before the bell rings.  We have half an hour."  He stood up and grabbed my hand.

We snuck out of the cafeteria and into the chill air.  He pulled me along until we were out of view of the school.  "Ok we're safe from any watchful eyes."

"Shawn you're crazy," I chuckled.

"Well baby I'm a fool for you," he sung.

"Cause underneath the darkness, there's a light that is trying so hard to be seen."

"So you've heard my songs?

"Of course!  They're so relatable and I just love them so much!  I know them all by heart!"

"Oh wow!  Maybe I should take you on tour with me, the fans would love you."

"Ahaha, I'd love that Mendes."

"I'll clear it by Andrew, he's my manager, then we can start rehearsing!"

"Lily, earth to Lily!"

"Oh, sorry, I was daydreaming.  What were you saying?"  I shook my head, going on tour would be nice but unrealistic.

Stop crushing on him, he'll never like you back.  He has millions of fans anyways!

"I was asking you what your favorite song was?"

"Imagination."

"In my dreams, you're with me.  We'll be everything I want us to be.  And from then, who knows.  Maybe this will be the night that we kiss for the first time.  Or is that just me and my imagination."

I tried to calm my breathing as he finished singing the chorus.  I'd always had a problem with anxiety, and feelings like this didn't help, but I didn't mind.

Shawn suddenly stopped walking and faced me.  He stared intently into my eyes.  I felt as if those big brown eyes were drilling into my soul.  I was afraid all her secrets would be revealed.

He took a step closer, then stopped.  He lifted his hand and suddenly swatted it above my head, "You're all good now.  There was a bee hovering on your head."

I tried not to let my face fall, but I was secretly disappointed, "At least you got it."

"You're a lot less squeamish than my girlfriend, but I can't make her any more brave than she already is," he laughed.

"O-oh I am? I guess that's a good thing." That physical feeling of extreme pain; like you just got a bullet in your chest, when you see the person you love, love someone else.

That's what I was feeling right now. I realized in that moment that he was never mine and he will never be mine. "We should probably head back now."

"But we've barely been out! Come on Lily just a little bit more! You're the coolest girl I've met in a long time! I'm so glad we're friends!"

Ouch, friend-zoned.

"I know I know, I just want to be safe."

Shawn nodded his head and turned around, "I'll get you back safe Miss Lily."

We arrived back at the school a few minutes before the bell rang. "Well thank you for accompanying me! We should do it again sometime!"

"Yeah Shawn that'd be nice."

"Ok I gotta go, catch ya later!"

"Bye see you soon!" I walked toward my locker to grab my notebook. Suddenly someone came up behind me and covered her eyes, "Guess who!"

"Ahaha it's you Faye."

"Awww how'd you guess!"  She stepped next to me and grinned widely.  "So where we you during lunch?  I didn't see you!"

"Oh, I was uh, Shawn was showing me around."

There was an expression that passed over Faye's face that was unreadable, but it cleared away as quickly as it came.  "Oh nice!  Next time let me know, I wanna show you around too."

"Of course!" We walked to class together arm in arm.

"Hey babe, are we still doing 7 pm tonight?"

"Yeah that's fine with me darling," Shawn sighed a little.

My heart stopped, I recognized that voice.  Wait, is SHE his girlfriend?
