It was early morning. The sun was peeking through the heavy clouds hanging in the sky and dusting the world with a soft glow. The squirrels and birds were going about their morning routine. The morning was not routine, however, for a certain snake man. He was sitting on his couch, huddled under a blanket with heavy bags under his eyes. He hadn't slept last night. He could feel something was off. Bile swirled in the pit of his stomach and threatened to force its way up.

It had been a few weeks since he had last met with Remus, Roman or Virgil and he was getting lonely. It was like a cloud that no matter how hard he tried or how many times he got it to go away, it kept reforming. It was getting on his nerves.

Deceit checked the time. It was a quarter of an hour until he had to leave. He sighed and stood up. He walked past his kitchen, deciding he couldn't eat like this, and made his way to his bedroom. He got dressed and ready for work, then headed out. The drive was slow, and traffic had built up by the time he had gotten to the main road. He nearly dozed off behind the wheel several times, just barely jolting awake again.

When he finally arrived at court, he was ten minutes late. To top it off, someone stepped on his foot on their way in. He grumbled and rushed towards the courtroom where everyone was waiting. Thankfully, it seemed someone was having an even worse day, because the defence wasn't there and came in a few minutes after Deceit. He heard the judge mutter a 'what am I going to do with you two' under her breath as she rubbed her beautiful dark brown face in exasperation.

Deceit took the opportunity to wiggle his way into the good graces of the jury. "I apologize, it seems traffic has been especially unforgiving today," he said charmingly. Chuckles rose up from the benches and he heard a 'you got that right'. He put a kind face on and continued, "I hope you all will find it in your hearts to be the example for those behind the wheel and be a bit more forgiving today." He could see the change in the faces gathered as they softened like play dough in his hands, allowing him to shape and mold them into whatever shape he desired.

The judge cleared he throat and started the trial.

During the break, he wandered the familiar halls. He passed by the grand doors of the entrance and to a familiar window. He paused and looked out at the view of the sun casting long shadows on large tree and pristine white steps. The familiar sight somewhat quelled the churning of his stomach, and he sighed. As he gazed out at the view, he felt a tickle at the back of his throat. It was fine. Probably just dehydrated. He coughed a bit and cleared his throat, taking a water bottle out of his bag and sipping on the cool beverage. He put the bottle away and rested his arms on the windowsill. He sighed as the itch went away.

He continued to gaze out at the birds and cars passing by. A fluffy-tailed squirrel clambered down the base of the tree and bounded over the grass with a few acorns to bury. He felt his eyes droop down and jolted back awake. He shook his head to clear the blurriness from his eyes. Another itch crawled its way up his throat, but he ignored it, sure it would go away.

It didn't. In fact, it grew and didn't shrink when he sipped at his water again. His lungs convulsed and he started wheezing, which turned into violent coughing. His knees almost gave out and he ran towards the convenient trashcan nearby. He coughed and hacked into it, syrupy red liquid splattered into it as he coughed and coughed. He barely registered the hand being placed on his back and rubbing soothing circles. His cough eventually died out and he wiped his mouth with a handkerchief before looking towards the figure still rubbing his back.

It was a short, plump woman he recognized from the jurry. She smiled sympathetically at him and continued rubbing his back until he straightened up and adjusted his suit. He thanked her and she continued on her way towards the restrooms. Deceit sighed and sat on one of the benches while he waited for his break to be over. About a half hour later of watching the road outside and checking his phone, he remembered that Remus didn't work his night job anymore and would probably be awake.
