Corey wanted to meet up at the café again. I walked over with his jacket and my small backpack that consisted of my phone, earbuds, sketchbook, and keys. I was about to walk over and order a drink when I heard a call for my name. I turn to see Corey in the booth we sat in yesterday, he had two cups.
I walk over while doing so I notice his face looks sadder than yesterday. As I got closer and closer I realized his eyes were red and faint tear stains on his cheeks.
"Hey Corey," I said in a softer tone.
"Hey Y/N. I bought you a coffee since I read what your cup had in it yesterday," He said with a sad smile.
I sat across from him and place the jacket on the table. "Your jacket."
"Thanks," He said. He slung it over a shoulder since he had a hoodie on.
"So what's up with you?" I ask.
"Devyn and I just broke up," he said with a sad tone.
He gripped he cup harshly as I saw his eyes starting to well up. I place a hand over the one that wasn't gripping the cup. He stares at my hand then, with his eyes, traces my arm to my shoulder, to my neck, then stares at my face. All I did was smile and he did as well.
"Do you want a hug?" I asked.
He nods his head.
I go around the table and sit beside him. He turns to me before I give him a hug, he returns it. I hear a sniffle from him so I back up a bit and poke his nose randomly making him laugh. I smile again, hearing his laugh.
"Thanks for that Y/N," he said smiling.
"No problem Corey."
For the last week, Corey and I are always meeting up at the Café, today in the morning. Today was a day I wish I could skip, it made me sad. It was the day of my brother's birthday who had passed away. I walk to the café with the bag I always bring, just in case he forgets to come. It's happened to me before, I'm stood up and don't have anything to distract myself with. I get in the café earlier than Corey so I order both of our coffees.
I take the same booth by the window. I take out a sketchbook and start a random sketch of a coffee.
"Hey Y/N," Corey said slipping into the seat across from me.
I offer a small wave.
"Not talkative today?" He asks taking his cup.
I shrug, after that silence.
"So what's up with you?" He asks.
I look down, not knowing how to respond. He comes over and sits beside me. He places his hand atop mine, giving me a smile. "What's up?"
"Today is just... a sad day for me," I said.
"Why's that?" Corey asked.
"Today is my brother's birthday, he passed away a couple years ago," I said.
Corey said nothing, he just wrapped me into his arms for a hug. I hugged him back. I appreciated his attempts to make me happier. A loud crack of thunder was heard from outside. I look to see it's raining heavily.
"Geez," He said.
"I like the rain and thunder," I said looking outside. In Los Angeles, it doesn't rain much.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him smiling. We sat there for a few minutes of silence, the only sounds were distant conversations, the baristas doing their job, and the sound of rain tapping against the window. Peaceful is what I'd describe it as.
"I need to walk in the rain," I complained. Corey laughed.
"I can give you my hoodie," he said.
"Don't you have to walk in the rain too?" I asked.
"I could get an uber," he said.
"Fine," I said.
He took his hoodie off, exposing his t-shirt. I slip it on my small body and laugh. "It's so big on me!"
He smiles at me. I grab a small bag and throw it over a shoulder, glad this is waterproof.
"Lemme walk you home," Corey said.
"No! You'll get sick," I said.
"No, I won't. Just lemme take you!" He said.
I sigh in defeat and stand up. I motion for him to follow me. I flip the hood up and run down a couple of blocks with Corey. We're laughing while we run. A layer of water glistens from the wet concrete as we head to the apartment. Car lights shimmer in the water in uncanny shapes as they pass or wait. When we arrive at my apartment I invite him inside.
"I'll go get you a towel," I said, placing my bag on the couch.
I walk to the bathroom and find a towel in the small closet. I walk out, tossing it to Corey. He was on his phone. It hit him in the face and he and I ended up laughing. I change out of the hoodie, shirt, and jeans into some clothes I consider comfortable. I walk out and sit on the couch with Corey. Corey was drying his hair with the towel still.
"Man Bun Man," I said.
"Man Bun Man?" He said laughing.
"Man Bun Man."
