TEN.
broken trust

Mando began walking towards the speeder, holding the child in one arm. My heart began to race as I watched him lower the child into the speeder. I furrowed my eyebrows, feeling absolutely angry about the whole thing.

Mando peered at me before looking back down at the child, hesitating to leave him. I glanced around at everyone with weapons and blasters in their hands.

"You know what? You're wrong." I said to Greef as I gave Mando one last look before nodding, giving him the signal to..

BANG

Mando ducked inside the speeder as everyone started shooting at us. I dodged all their blasts and quickly ran into the speeder. Mando quickly gave me the child before shooting back at the hunters.

"Drive..!" Mando shouted at the droid; it shook its head frantically. Mando growled, "Drive!"

The droid turned back around and began driving through the street in a rapid pace. Mando had shot most of the hunters down as they chased after us. In the corner of my eye, I saw someone on top of a building, trying to shoot us from a high ground. I grabbed my blaster from my emissary belt, aiming it at the hunter.

Effortlessly, I shot the hunter down, and the body came tumbling down. As Mando continued to shoot, the droid that was steering the speeder was shot down. The speeder came to a harsh stop, forcing all the metal inside of it to crash on top of us.

Mando grabbed his rifle, waiting for the right moment to start shooting. I held my blaster closer to my chest as I saw some hunters crowd around the broken speeder. Suddenly, Mando began to shoot, disintegrating anything that came our way. Meanwhile, I was shooting at those who were caught off guard from Mando's rifle.

"That's one impressive weapon!" Greef exclaimed as the shooting slowly stopped. Mando peaked over the speeder's ledge.

"Here's what I'll do," Mando announced. "I'm gonna walk to my ship with both the kid and the wanted hunter.. and you're gonna let it happen."

"No. How about this?" Greef continued as I looked around, feeling a cold presence around us. I tucked the child under my arm, protecting it from all the hunters. "We take them both, and if you try to stop us, we kill you and we strip your body for parts."

I immediately kicked a hunter right in the chest and used the blaster to finish him off, leaving the kid inside the speeder. I leaned back into it as Mando used his flamethrower on some of the hunters. However, it soon malfunctioned which caused him to grunt in frustration.

They continued to shoot back at us; there were too many of them for us to fight, and we were slowly losing our strength. I sighed and quickly caught glimpse of Mando looking down at the child as it cooed up at him. It was as if he was vulnerable to the child -- it was a completely new side of him that I had't really seen before.

As the hunters started getting closer to the speeder, a loud boom came ringing throughout the air. Mando and I looked up at the sky, watching as figures began making their way into the fight -- Mandalorians.

As they joined in on the fight, I narrowed in on Greed and shot at him. He looked me right in the eyes then ran away with a defeated look on his face. Mando was helpless -- he looked as if he was shocked or maybe even relieved to see the Mandalorians helping. Mando wasn't doing anything.. he was just watching.

"You two, get out of here!" A Mandalorian yelled through the loud shots, shooting at the hunters. I gave Mando his blaster back, preparing to leave. "We'll hold them off!"

"You're going to have to relocate the covert." Mando announced sternly as he carried the child in one arm.

"This is the Way."

".. This is the Way." Mando nodded, glancing at the Mandalorians for one last time before leading me back to his ship.

Mando slowed his pace down as he entered his ship. I was following behind him until I felt a cold, sharp blade touch the lower part of my neck. I held my head up as the other gloved hand pointed a blaster at Mando.

"Hold it, Mando."

He slowly turned around; his grasp on the child tightening. His helmet glanced at me before facing the man who held me hostage -- Greef Karga.

"I didn't want it to come to this," He announced, the blade digging into my skin. "But then you broke the Code."

Mando paused for a second, thinking. Then within a blink of an eye, he released a fog from inside his ship, making Greef cough. While he wasn't paying attention, I kicked him right in the kneecap and grabbed his blaster.

Before I could shoot, Mando shot him right in the chest. I quickly knocked Greef off the ship with my foot before turning back to face Mando. Although the cut in my neck was a bit deep, it was definitely a lot better than getting murdered.

"Thanks," I said as the fog slowly went away. I threw Greef's blaster over to Mando, scoffing. "But don't think this makes up for what you did to me."

The ship started to fly away as the fight with the bounty hunters seemed to continue outside. I looked out through the ship's window to see a Mandalorian flying right outside with a jetpack, saluting Mando.

"I gotta get one of those." Mando mumbled to himself.

I looked down at my handcuffs, pursing my lips as I tried moving my wrists apart. I closed my eyes, trying to use the Force to take off the handcuffs. I focused on its power and gracefulness and before I knew it.. I had propped open the cuffs.

I sighed, rubbing my wrists. Mando looked back at me, then at the handcuffs on the floor. It seemed as though he wanted to ask me something but stopped himself from doing so. He stared at me for a bit before placing his attention back on the control panel.

".. Why'd you come back?" I asked, breaking the silence. I grabbed a roll of bandages from my bag and began wrapping it around my neck. Mando didn't turn back around to look at me this time.

"I had to."

"No, you didn't." I replied, placing the roll of bandages back in my bag. "If anything, you could've just gone for the kid."

"Look," Mando turned around as the tension grew. "That's all in the past now. Why can't you just--"

"Move on?" I laughed sarcastically. "You expect me to trust you after all that? After you turned me in?"

"I don't expect you to trust me..!" His voice began to grow louder and more intense as he spoke. "No one does. Because in their eyes, I'm just a bounty hunter."

I held my tongue, not daring to speak any further on this subject. I could already tell I went too far. I sighed, turning my gaze onto the crib as the child cooed at us. Mando turned back around to focus on piloting the ship -- anger and frustration was radiating off of him.

Trust.. it sure is a valuable thing. If broken, it can be hard to earn back.
