I was just finishing my homework when I heard the door slam downstairs. That means my parents are home. Quickly, I shut my book and frantically searched for a place to hide.
I had a couple of options:
-Under the bed, an obvious one which I had tried before, it didn't work.
-Inside the cupboard, it's easy to fit behind the clothes but my feet would still be visible, I've been found there before.
-Behind the door, when they open it, they won't be able to see me, but they normally check there first.
In the end I leaped to the curtains, trying to hide behind them. It was a new idea that I'd had in the moment, hoping they wouldn't find me. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, my hands started trembling. I took deep breaths, knowing I had to hold my breath when they came in so they wouldn't hear me.
Suddenly the door to my room flew open, luckily I wasn't behind it or that would've hurt.
"Y/n, where are you?" My dad snarled, his voice made a shiver go up my spine.
"Check her usual spots" my mum instructed him. I was a little relieved that I had chosen somewhere new to hide, but I wasn't safe yet.
I peeked out from behind the curtains, my dad was checking the bed, one hand under it and the other was holding a beer bottle. My mum was opening the cupboard and rifling through my clothes to check for me.
"Where is she?!" My mum growled, kicking the bed in frustration.
"I know she's in here somewhere" he told her. Then their eyes fell to the curtains, which I was cowering further behind.
"Gotcha" my dad snarled, deliberately taking slow steps towards me.
"We told you not to hide this time" my mum warned, tutting menacingly under her breath.
They ripped the entire curtain down, revealing me standing in the corner. I looked at the floor, ignoring their glares and evil smiles. There was a crash, my dad had smashed his bottle on the table, breaking it in half. I didn't have to guess what he was planning to do with it.
I accepted my fate, refusing to look at them as they approached me. The last thing I remember was my dad raising his bottle and my mum clenching her fists.
