"I'm sorry Ember. You know we'd love to keep you on but we have to start letting go of staff," my boss stated.

I nodded. I hope I look composed but thoughts are running rapidly through my mind.

"I understand." I knew this day was coming but I didn't expect it to be today.

I worked as an assistant manager at the city park. Business was becoming slower each year and I knew some facilities were being closed and staff needed to be cut. Since I'm only an assistant manager, I figured I would be one of the first to go. I was right.

I cleared my things from my shared office and got into my car. It was hard to comprehend. I put four years into working there. I worked my ass off only to get fired. Putting myself through college and helping to run the city events was a lot to juggle. A part of me was hoping that since I graduated a few years ago, a promotion would follow but it never came. I guess I don't need to worry about that anymore. I start my car and drive home.

...

My head's a mess. I don't know what to do with myself now. So I call the only person who can help me, my twin sister, Charleigh. She moved to California a few years ago while I stayed home in Wisconsin.

I hear her pick up.

"What's up? I was actually meaning to call you," I hear excitement in her voice.

"Yeah?"

The excitement I just heard instantly went away. "You okay, Ember? You sound off."

"I just got fired," I manage to mumble.

I fill her in on the details and she's quick to comfort me.

...

"So, what's your plan now?" She asks carefully.

"I have no fucking clue. I thought I would get a few more years of working there."

"Okay this might sound crazy but hear me out," she tells me. "You know how you always joked about moving to California with me? Well what if you actually did?"

I pause. I never actually seriously considered it. "Char, I don't know. That's a big change."

She spends the next hour trying to convince me.

"Okay, let me think about it. I make no promises though."

"Good enough for me," she laughs. "But I have really big news and I'm not gonna tell you unless you move in with me."

"Wait, what?" C'mon, you have to tell me!!"

"I do not." And with that she hangs up the phone.

I can't believe her sometimes. I laugh to myself. She definitely knows how to get her way. I know she'd tell me anyway but I've still got a lot of thinking to do.

...

After lying awake all night, pondering ever possible scenario, I've made up my mind. I'm moving to California.

A/n: hey y'all! Thanks for reading! This is my first story and honestly, it's just for fun. I promise Damien will be in it, I just want to set up a backstory first! This will probably end up being a slow burn. If you feel like it, leave feedback! I'd love to know what you think! If not, thanks for reading anyway! :)
