Author's Note:

Helloooo everyone! Chapter 12 is finally up wooo hooo! Okay so I wanted to test something out in this chapter. Sara and Madison are going to sing a song together as cheesy as that sounds, but whatevs. I like the idea. In case there's any confusion as to who is singing what, the italics are Sara's lines and the Bold italics are Madison's. So yeah, I hope you enjoy.

Chapter 12: Thirteen

Sara hummed along to one of my favorite Big Star songs as it played on the radio. She was so immersed into the melancholy tune that I felt as if I were intruding in on her world. It was so easy to admire her as I casually stole side glances; however, still not wanting to let her essence distract me from the road, I tried to keep the glances to a minimum.

“You should keep your eyes on the road before we crash. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to leave this world with an empty stomach,” Sara joked as she ran her fingers through her hair. If ethnic people could blush, my cheeks would be so red right now. I thought I was being subtle.

“Well, excuse me for appreciating your radiance as you hum along to one of my favorite songs. You just looked so at peace. I really dig that,” I retorted with a playful smirk.

“Oh gosh. Did you just say that you really ‘dig that.’?” I ducked my head in embarrassment. I was hoping she wouldn’t say anything. “If the girls at our high school knew you were such a dork, I doubt you would have gotten as many…dates as you did,” Sara winked at me.

“The ladies love the way I talk. I’m so smooth; don’t even try to deny it.” Now it was my turn to wink at her.

“Yeah, you’re a real smooth talker. I just feel so…scandalized.” She threw in a dramatic eye roll with that statement. “And who are these ‘ladies’ that you speak of, huh?” Sara crossed her arms and gave me the ‘look.’ Everyone knows that look.  An eyebrow raise basically says that I better give her the right answer. As if there is a right or wrong answer to that question.

“Well, there are no ‘ladies’ as of late; at least not since Cindi. There is however, a ‘lady’ that I am very interested in.”

“A lady? Really? Tell me about her.”

“How about this, I’ll tell you all about her when we get back to your place late. I’m starving and we just got to Bernie’s,” I smiled as I quickly unbuckled my seatbelt and leapt out the car in order to open Sara’s door.

“You are quite the charmer aren’t you? If you keep this up, I’ll definitely try to give that lady of yours a run for her money.” I gulped at that statement as she sashayed into the hole in the wall bagel shop. She is really going to be the death of me.

Bernie’s is a quaint little establishment, but still had a decent amount of food traffic throughout the day, despite its location. As soon as we entered through the door I was greeted by a short, husky gentleman from behind the counter.

“Hey Mads! I haven’t seen you around for quite some time. I’m glad you could stop by.”

“Sup Bernie, how are ya? I’m sorry I haven’t been by much. I’m trying to lay off the carbs,” I joked as he rolled his eyes at me.

“Yeah, whatever. Excuses, excuses. Why don’t you introduce me to your lady friend instead of shootin’ the shit.”
