Lois walked down the passageway to Caroline's ward. She'd been more than delighted when Aunt Emni asked her to help keep Caroline company while she was away at work as Caroline hated the four walls of the hospital. Just yesterday, she'd complained that the hospital was complete boredom. The minutes feel like hours here, and the hours feel like days. Lois could remember her whine the previous day. She hoped she hadn't wasted a lot of time at home, leaving Caroline bored. Lois opened the door. Caroline was so engrossed in what she was reading that she didn't notice Lois come in. She looked far from bored.
"Look who's having fun." Lois grinned as she walked to the bed where Caroline lay.
"Lois!" Caroline smiled and stretched out her hands for a hug when she saw her.
Caroline's puffy eyes and dull smile didn't go unnoticed by Lois. Lois hugged her.
"How're you feeling?" She asked as she placed the back of her hands on her forehead to check her temperature. It wasn't as high as it was yesterday.
"I feel fine. It's just this headache that keeps coming back. Asides that, I think I'm okay. I don't know why the doctors are still keeping me here."
"Don't' worry. You'll be out of here soon."
Lois pulled a chair close to Caroline's bed, studying Caroline as she spoke. She could tell Caroline hadn't gotten over her loss. Lois had spent the past few days trying to comfort her, but it seemed her efforts didn't make much of a difference. She didn't know what else to do other than to keep praying for her. She'll stick with Caroline throughout this phase. If she was ever going to be a shoulder for Caroline to cry on, it was now. She noticed the book Caroline had been engrossed in was the fashion magazine she'd given her the previous day.
"You like it?" She asked Caroline.
"Yes." Caroline nodded. "There's so much inspiration here. I can't count the number of Ideas I've gotten this just morning."
"I'm glad you like it."
"It's just very sad, how the world is rapidly changing. And when you don't change along with it, it's like you become left out and you suffer for it."
"How do you mean?" Lois asked.
"The world is turning into something else in terms of dressing. People are beginning to love the indecent and improper clothes, and fashion designers are beginning to design more of these, but when people like us don't because we want to design clothes that please God, we get much lower patronage because we aren't designing what's trending. The opportunities are much less than if we design what the world loves."
"That's true" Lois nodded. "And it's not just in the fashion industry. It's everywhere. I have a friend who is a music producer. This guy is a very talented producer but he produces strictly gospel music. He complained that It's been very tough because the majority of people prefer to listen to the kind of music that doesn't glorify God. You know, music played in clubs and the likes."
"That's true." Caroline sighed. "It's everywhere."
"Following Jesus comes with some costs Caroline. But the peace and fulfillment you'll get will far supersede the money and fame people of the world chase after."
"That's very true." Caroline grinned. "I've seen that firsthand."
"What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?"
"It's all vanity." Caroline nodded.
"And the good thing is God always prospers his faithful children. Remember the place in Psalms that talks about the Lord delighting in the prosperity of his servant?"
