I quickly walked out of the room and walked through the light blue hallways of my house. I sighed as I looked out of the window to my right, staring at the snowy landscape. Lily's parents must be worried sick about her. I hope she'll feel better by tomorrow. I thought as I walked into the dining room.
The dining room was a dark blue color with a dark colored wood trim. The mahogany dining table stood above a blue and white diamond pattern carpet. The floor was polished redwood. In one of the corners was a light blue decorative cabinet filled with decorative plates, cups, and utensils.
I walked towards the dining table and pulled out one of the chairs to sit on. I leaned on the table with one arm as I stared across the room, looking at the front door through the hallway. Any minute now, Beatrix should be here with the medicine. I thought as I tapped on the table with my other hand. I pulled down the surgical mask slightly and took a deep breath.
What an eventful day, didn't expect to take a dive into a frozen lake. Good thing I took those swimming lessons during summer all those years ago. I wonder what she was doing so far into the forest, doesn't she know it's dangerous? I-Is she a runaway? No, can't be. A runaway would travel to a populated area and they would also have a bag of stuff. Did she get lost? Most likely. I wondered about the possibilities of why Lily would be in a forest in the dead of winter.
I shook my head, noticing the sound of the front door being opened. A girl around my age stood at the front door, holding a bag of medicine. She dropped the medicine on the ground and quickly took off her brown coat before putting it on the coat rack next on her left.
She wore a bright yellow hijab and had caramel skin. She wore a brown sweater and black leggings. She had soft features, a round face that had a sweet smile on it, brown eyes, and thin eyebrows. She was on the short side compared to me, 5'4 to my 6 ft. Like me, we were both slender.
She walked towards and plopped the medicine on the table. Taking a seat next to me she said,"How have you been? You scared the crap out of me when you told me a kid fell into a frozen lake! And when you told me you dove right in to save her! Anyway, I got some children's Tylenol. I got a few since we don't exactly know how old she is or how much she weighs. Also is the girl okay?" She asked.
"I'm fine Beatrix, the girl is taking a nap in the guest room. Thanks for coming on such a short notice." I said, thanking her.
"No problem Sim! Anything for you, so did ya find anything about her?"
"Unfortunately no, she had just woken up when I walked in, I do know that her name is Lily Wing? Whing? Anyway, I found twenty dollars in her jacket so I'm thinking she's a runaway but the thing is, she doesn't have any stuff with her." I answered, telling her what I thought.
"Sometimes runaways don't have the time to get stuff, but you're right in a way. If I were a runaway I would try to leave to a city or at least somewhere where there's people, definitely not to a closed off and isolated area like a forest. 'Specially not in winter. So what do you think?"
Beatrix and I brainstormed a couple ideas as to why Lily would be in the forest. It helped having another person come up with ideas, even if some of them were over the top and plain old ridiculous.
"You know what if she's a famous celebrity's kid and decided to runaway because she couldn't take the fame any longer?! You know how brutal paparazzi are right?" Beatrix exclaimed.
I stifled a laugh before saying,"That's definitely not true, beside wouldn't she have brought a lot more money than twenty dollars if she were a celebrity's kid? Try to think realistically and please try to be a little more serious."
"You're no fun, anyway what do you think about her situation? Other than the ones that we've already listed off."
"You know, now that I think of it, earlier I was about to close the door to her room but she suddenly yelled wait and told me to leave it open. Do-do you think that there's a possibility that she's been–" I started before being interrupted.
"I don't want to think that such a horrible thing would happen to her! I really hope that you're over thinking things and that she's just scared of the dark... we can't rule out that possibility though."
"Let's go check on her and give her some Tylenol." I suggested.
Beatrix nodded and followed me to the guest bedroom verging the bag of medicine. I opened the door a little more and went in to see Lily napping quietly. I walked to her side and gently shook her awake.
"I'm sorry to wake you up, but my friend brought some Tylenol for you. Do you mind taking it now?" I asked softly so that I didn't startle her. She looked up at me tiredly before sitting up. She let out a yawn as she rubbed her eyes.
"Is it okay if I ask you how old you are and how much you weigh?" She nodded before yawning yet again.
"I'm thirteen and about ninety pounds last time I checked." She answered softly and quickly. She looked behind me to stare at Beatrix as Beatrix juggled around the medicine to find the right one. Beatrix looked up and smiled widely at Lily.
"Hi there, I'm Beatrix. Simon here told me that you're name is Lily. It's nice to meet you when you're awake." Beatrix said, finally finding the right one. "This is the Junior Strength tablet. Let's see... kids 96 pounds should get 4 tablets but that's for 6-11 years of age. Eh, it should be fine."
I turned around to glare at her but Lily responded with, "That's fine. Is it the chewable ones or the ones that you have to swallow? 'Cause I can't swallow the tablets that well."
"She's so adorable." Beatrix whispered to me before answering her question. "Don't worry, it's the chewable ones. Here, I need you to thoroughly chew them before swallowing them, okay?"
"You know, I'm not a toddler. You don't need to talk to me like that." Lily said, clearly annoyed at all the baby talk.
"Oh sorry about that, you just seem so small right now that I can't help but talk to you like that. Anyway here the tablets, there's already a water bottle in you desk so drink that afterwards." Beatrix explained as she handed Lily the tablets.
Lily did just as she was instructed and gulped down the water bottle, finishing it.
"Oh look at the time! My shifts starts in just twenty minutes! Anyway bye Simon, Lily. I hope you feel better." Beatrix exclaimed as she quickly hurried out of the room, taking the Tylenol with her.
