As soon as Darren's lips touched mine, I felt a surge of energy through my entire body. I immedietly stopped shaking and felt as if the wind was knocked out of me. My body was in fire, my skin burning under his touch. My mind went fuzzy, all of my thoughts jumbling together in a hazy mess. All I could think about was the way his lips felt on mine. He was so gentle, but at the same time the kiss was so strong. His mouth moved so carefully against mine. If he wasn't holding me steady, I'm sure I would have fainted.
As he pulled his face away from mine, I felt him hesitate a moment longer with his lips still connected to mine. It was the first time I had ever noticed him being unsure. That almost frightened me, but I didn't allow myself to dwell on it.
Darren looked into my eyes, still holding my face softly in his hands where the made their way while he had been kissing me. I felt weak, my knees trembling ever so slightly. His hazel eyes were burning with passion. I couldn't help but hope that his heart was beating as fiercely as mine. I wanted him to feel the butterflies he was making me feel.
And then I snapped back into the present. I knew that it was my line, so I opened my mouth to speak. I was drawing a blank. My mind continued to wander on the warmth I was feeling everywhere he had touched me, the soft press of his lips, the way he gently glided his fingertips across my skin...But no words. I just kept staring at him, his eyes consuming mine completely. The only sound was that of my quickened breathing.
Then he raised his eyebrows and looked down, breaking the connection. "Um.." He cleared his throat. "This is, uh, where you're supposed to say, 'It's you.'"
My eyebrows pulled together, but I couldn't take my eyes off of his. They were so brown all of a sudden in the dimmed lighting. They were soft, but he seemed disoriented. I knew that I had to say something, so I just mummbled, "Sorry."
Darren choked out a chuckle. He still wouldn't look back up at me. "It's okay. We can always go over it again." And then he glanced up at me, his eyes meeting mine as he looked up through his long, dark lashes. I felt the heat rising to my face all over again. "If you'd like."
It was as if he was smothering me with his eyes. He was telling me that we could do the scene again and his lips would be on mine once more. The breath caught in my throat just at the thought. I knew I couldn't get through him kissing me for a second time in the same night, but at the same time there was nothing I wanted more. Him looking at me the way he was already had my heart jumping out of my chest, the kiss still lingering on my mouth. I couldn't imagine it happening all over again. "I, umm..."
"Unless you want to be done for the night. That's perfectly fine, too."
I didn't want to stop and couldn't make the words come out. But this needed to end. "I'm really tired," was all I could manage to squeak out.
And then at that very moment, a huge boom of thunder rang through the air so loud that I practically leaped onto Darren's lap. All of the power went out and rain immediately followed, deafeningly roaring down on the roof. I shivered.
Darren whispered, "And that's my cue."
He started to get up, but my hand flew to his forearm. "Wait. You shouldn't walk out in the rain." He looked down at me with humor playing in his eyes. I didn't want to sound like I was beggining, but I really didn't want him to leave. This was the perfect excuse. "Please? You can just stay here tonight."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure!" I had never been so sure of anything in my entire life.
Nodding, he softly approved of my request by saying, "You're right. Thank you." He sat back down. "Only problem is that I just don't think I'll be able to fall asleep just yet."
Butterflies swept through my stomach. I wasn't sure if they would ever go away. "Did you have something in mind?"
"Have you explored your apartment at all? Sometimes, you can find some really cool things hidden in the weirdest spots. It might be fun to-" He stopped mid-sentence, noticing the huge smile growing on my face.
I muffled an agreement, already rising from my seat and heading towards the bedroom. Low laughter followed behind me. Even I was feeling more awake as the giggling began, excitement coursing through my veins. I dropped to my knees at the bureau in my bedroom, slowly opening the bottom drawer. Nothing. I opened the second drawer to find some newspapers. As I rummaged through them, Darren walked into the room with some huge, white candles. "These might help," he announced. I walked up to him and grabbed three of the candles, placing them around the apartment as he did the same. He lit them with a matchbook, brightening the rooms slightly.
Without any luck after searching the majority of the bedroom, I heard Darren shout from the kitchen. "Hey, you should check this out."
I made my way into the living room just in time to see Darren come out of the kitchen. A tiny, battery-operated radio fit perfectly in his strong hands. Music.
