Chapter (1)
The fledgling crow quickly scampered over the large metal scraps, making his way towards a gruff looking snake. "Osiris! I finished up the motor!" The reptilian's amber eyes judgmentally scanned the crow standing proudly before him.
"And?"
"Aaand what?"
"What parts did you hopelessly try to not use?" Callidus went silent. "..Only a few screws this time." Osiris chuckled. "Here, these two are for the inner engines and these will hold it all together, so get on back to work now." Osiris handed Callidus a handful of assorted screws.
"Hmph." Callidus took them, sticking his tongue out at the snake before scampering on back to his workstation. Callidus was working on one of many small engines for the great airship the Earworm, and Callidus was proud to say so.
He looked up to those who sailed the sky on the great Earworm, fighting for their freedom. One day, Callidus was sure he'd be captain, so he made sure to make the best engines of all. The crow heard knocking on his pole, which marked where he was supposed to be. All of the workers had them.
Callidus nodded his head in approval for them to come in, already knowing who it probably was, and was already back working on the engine. "Hey, captain." The small cat nudged him, plopping down next to him. "Hi, Maeve." Callidus grumbled.
Maeve..wasn't the most fun to be around, in his mind. He thought she was annoying and a really bad smith. Maeve started fiddling with the gears of the motor. "Osiris says me and you are getting partnered up for the RD next week." She gradually started smiling.
The RD were weekly meetings held by people apart of the revolution, and the laborers such as Callidus and Maeve were to partner up and attempt to create the most efficient motor. Depending on your creation, you'd advance to more technical needs of the revolution.
Callidus' heart sank. How was he supposed to advance with a partner like Maeve? All thanks to Osiris.. "Sounds good." The crow replied plainly, focusing on his work. Maeve cocked her head and grumbled, continuing to fidget with the gears.
"I thought you'd be more excited! This is only our third time."
"Never said I wasn't. And hey, stop touching that!" Callidus shoved the tuxedo cat's paw off of the delicate gears, nearly pushing them all out of order.
"Okay, okay! Well, I'll see you at lunch." And so, the feline waltzed off. The crow sighed. It'd probably take him an hour or so to finish, and then he'd have to start some other motors for more minor airships. Smithing wasn't Callidus' favorite, but as a young teen, it was the least he could do for the camp that took him in.
And so, Callidus worked, and worked hard, all up until lunch break. He heard that they were having soup and bread that day, which was a rare treat.
