Chapter (2)
The small lunch benches mostly held laborers from the ages eight to fifteen such as Callidus, but there were adults circling them constantly, firearms on hand, since apparently they were under "a constant threat", even though the nine years Callidus had lived there nothing had ever taken place.
"So, you really don't want anything to do with it?" Callidus' buddy Arlo asked, nudging his shoulder, referring to running away. Arlo was a grey wolf pup just a year younger than Callidus, who was quite keen on the idea of staying loyal to the government instead of sticking with the revolution camp.
"No, no! I already told you, I want to be free." Callidus stuck out his chest proudly. "Oh c'mon.." Arlo sipped his soup. "We are free. There's just a little something called laws that keep us in line, is all."
"Yeah, that prevents us from speaking freely and practicing what we wish. Where's our freedom there?" Callidus fired back. He was passionate about his beliefs. "Just because you can't do everything to your heart's content doesn't mean you aren't free." Arlo glared.
"Guys, guys. Lunch is almost over... Let's just eat. We all have different opinions, so let's just accept that." Callidus' other buddy Enya, a small, red-eyed mouse, spoke up. She was the motherly friend, keeping the others at peace when all hell broke loose.
Callidus and Arlo shut up, sipping their soup and munching on their bread just as she was. "Bam!" There was a sound like thunder, spooking the whole crowd of laborers and watchers.
All the attention was drawn to a yellow lab standing before them, who was indeed armed. Callidus felt his heart sink.
The watchers all walked in front of the laborers, guarding them the best they could, raising their firearms. The lab smirked. "Back down, back down." The lab spoke in his gruff voice. He raised his paw in the air, signaling. He wasn't alone. There was a whole army behind him, it seemed, with better weapons then the revolution camp could ever house. Enya squeezed the crow's wing. He squeezed back.
Osiris snarled at the lab, bravely slithering forward. "Make us! We stand for liberty, and we will never bow to you." He spoke loudly for all to hear, earning cheers from some of the younger laborers behind him. There was another sound like thunder, but not from the lab's firearm.
It was from one of the soldiers behind him, shooting at the ones who cheered. The whole camp shook, falling into silence once again. Osiris was the one to break it.
"Charge!" He shouted. And that's when a hell broke loose that even Enya couldn't settle. The heavy, suffocating stench of gunpowder immediately filled the air, and cries could be heard from all around as the revolution army was completely destroyed in a matter of minutes. The laborers were having horrible memories of their past, such as Callidus, and nobody could help them.
The lab's army charged towards them, trampling anything that got in their way. Callidus looked to his side, seeing a fearful Enya, but no Arlo.
Hot tears streamed down the crow's face as his PTSD hit hard. Everyone around them was being slaughtered. There.. There was nothing he could do.
He felt like falling to the ground in the midst of it all, but Enya grabbed his wing with a determined expression. They knew what they had to do next.
And so, they ran.
