"Thanks," Midoryia said to Kurogiri as he swiftly untied the ropes binding the boy to the chair. He stood up and rolled the tension from his aching shoulders, wincing when the pain increased. Tomura had left the bar and was sulking outside, leaving Midoryia alone with Kurogiri to discuss what their next move was going to be.
"I am very glad you have decided to join us, young Midoryia," Kurogiri said. "However, we must take precautionary measures to ensure that you can't betray us. You will not be allowed to leave this area unless you are accompanied by either myself or Tomura, and you will need to wear this tracker at all times." The older man pulled a small black choker with a metal disc on it out of his pocket.
Midoryia raised his eyebrows. "You just keep these on you at all times?"
Kurogiri shrugged. "If we find someone who could be useful to the League while we're scouting, we usually give them the trackers so they can't back out of the deal. Not all of them are in the form of necklaces." He pressed the disc on Midoryia's choker causing it to glow red for a second before fading back to silver. He handed it to Midoryia. "Any attempt to take the tracker off will immediately give you an electric shock powerful enough to knock you unconscious and will alert Tomura and I to your position. Put it on."
As Midoryia did up the clasp, he glanced around the bar, noticing a small television in the corner. The news was on, and it was displaying a disturbing headline.
"Yesterday afternoon a teenage boy was landed in hospital by a rampaging villain that appeared to be made of slime," the reporter said in a sombre voice. He was standing in front of a small street that was swarming with heroes and emergency services who were trying desperately to put out fires and move fallen debris. The buildings were partially destroyed with half of the walls smashed to pieces. "Nicknamed the 'Sludge Villain', this powerful man was almost too powerful for the heroes on scene, and nearly killed a young boy while trying to take control of his body." The screen switched to footage of the night before, where a boy with familiar spiky blonde hair was trying to blast his way out of the villain's slimy body with his quirk. "Luckily, All Might arrived on the scene with seconds to spare, capturing the villain and saving the child in the nick of time. The child sustained no major injuries; however, he was nearly suffocated to death, leaving him in critical condition..."
"Kacchan," Midoryia murmured. Looks like he didn't have the best day either, he thought grimly before he remembered what the cruel boy had said to him. Serves him right.
Kurogiri looked over at the T.V. "Hey," he said. "That's the man we were tracking yesterday. Looks like we got to see him in action after all. Pity he wasn't able to finish the job."
"Yeah," Midoryia muttered, "Pity."

Later that evening, Tomura walked back into the bar, appearing calm and collected rather than murderously enraged at Midoryia for being there. Kurogiri welcomed him back and filled him in on what they had discussed while he was absent and told him about the incarceration of the sludge villain. While this displeased Tomura, he shook it off and focused on the task at hand: discussing the plan for Midoryia.
"So, kid," he said as they sat at the bar. "What do you know about the school U.A?"
Midoryia's jaw clenched. The school he would never be able to attend was now a touchy subject for him. "I know that it turns out the best heroes," he said with anger bubbling in his stomach, "and that All Might himself went there, as well as a few other top heroes."
Tomura nodded. "That's the problem. When All Might finished school, he quickly climbed to the top of the hero rankings and became the Symbol of Peace, making life extremely difficult for all Villains. There are also plenty of other good heroes that came from U.A that took the villains completely by surprise. If we could know what Quirks the students have before they start to use them in the real world, we could pinpoint their weaknesses and be ready to take them down before their careers even start."
"That's where you come in," Kurogiri explained. "You could attend the school and get to know the students. You would report back to us about the Quirks of your classmates, their strengths, and their weaknesses. Then, when the League of Villains is ready to strike, we will know exactly how to defeat them."
Midoryia's eyes lit up, some of his enthusiasm seeping back into him. "Well," he said with an excited smile, "I do have this notebook that I use to record the Quirks, strengths and weaknesses of heroes. Maybe that would be useful!"
The older men glanced at each other, an awkward silence descending on the room. "What a nerd," Tomura muttered, causing Midoryia to laugh.
"I get that a lot," he said sourly. "Going back to the plan, I can see a huge hole in it. You can't just enrol in the Hero Course; you have to take an entrance exam. As we've established, I'm Quirkless, so I'd probably fail by a long shot."
The three males went quiet, trying to figure out a way past this problem. Finally, Kurogiri shrugged and said, "Well, there's nothing we can do except train you. Tomura's Master won't give a Quirk to just anyone. Besides, you will at least gain some information about the students."
Midoryia gaped at Kurogiri. "Did you say he can give people quirks?" Despite himself, Midoryia started to imagine himself with a Quirk, seeing himself become someone that people feared rather than someone to pick on and push around. He could show All Might, and Kacchan, and everyone what he was capable of.
Unfortunately, neither Tomura nor Kurogiri seemed to have heard him. Tomura stood and clapped Midoryia on the back. "I hope you appreciate what Kurogiri and I are doing for you," he said with somewhat falsely cheerful voice. "We've presented you with a great opportunity to take revenge on those who have wronged you, but now you have to work hard to hold up your end of the deal. Your training starts tomorrow."
With that, Tomura left the room, leaving Midoryia alone with Kurogiri at the small bar. Kurogiri stood and gestured for Midoryia to do the same. "Come with me, young Midoryia," he said. "I'll show you to the room you will be staying in."
Midoryia followed Kurogiri to a door behind the bar that led into a narrow hallway. The older man opened the second door on the right and held it open for Midoryia, allowing him to enter. The room was small, dark, and dusty from clear disuse, the paint on the walls was peeling, and there were no windows, but at least there was a couch.
"My apologies for the state of the room, Midoryia," Kurogiri said. "We do not usually allow members of the League to stay at our headquarters."
The younger boy turned to Kurogiri and smiled. "That's fine," he said sincerely. "You're giving me a chance to teach everyone who told me I could never be good enough a lesson," Midoryia's mouth twisted into a malicious grin. "And I'm very excited to do that."
Kurogiri nodded and left the room, leaving Midoryia to his thoughts. He was really doing this. It had all happened so fast. Would his classmates even notice that he was missing? What would his mum think when he didn't return home? For the first time that night, Midoryia felt his stomach twist with guilt at the thought of his mother crying, worried sick about her missing son.
He shook the image off. He wouldn't go back. With a determined and excited resolve settling within him, he flopped down on the dusty couch and closed his eyes.
