Silence. Nobody in the room spoke for a solid 30 seconds. Steve took one look at Norma and put his head down. Johnny's eyes darted back and forth between her and Ponyboy. Two-bit and Dally stared at Ponyboy, refusing to look at the girl he brought in with him. Sodapop and Darry looked her up and down before making eye contact with one another.

Soon every one of the gang moved their eyes onto Y/N. She was broken. Her eyes were glazed over with tears and she was staring in Ponyboy's eyes. Soon Darry broke the silence.

"Ponyboy where the hell have you been? You leave a note and then disappear all day? We had everyone out looking for you!"

"I went for a walk. I had some things to figure out. I met Norma and we got chatting... turns out we have a lot in common so we hung about all day." Pony refused to hold eye contact with Y/N as he spoke about this new girl.

"You should've let us know something at least Pone, we nearly had the whole town looking for ya." Sodapop tried to diffuse the situation a bit.

"Sorry that was probably my fault." Norma giggled as she spoke. "We just got talking, and he's so sweet! He asked me out on a date!" She squealed some more and wrapped her arms around Ponyboy.

The atmosphere was awkward once again and the gang made sly glances at Y/N. She finally decided to speak.

"Have fun." She almost whispered whilst brushing past the both of them and leaving.

"You're a real jerk Ponyboy." Johnny couldn't hold it it any longer.

"You're a piece of shit." Two-bit corrected. He was furious.

"Yeah well... Maybe being too nice was always my problem." Ponyboy answered. He motioned for Norma to leave.

"It was real nice meeting you." She declared as Ponyboy rushed her out. Once she left Ponyboy made his way to the kitchen, followed by a furious Darry.

"You never use your head Ponyboy! What're we supposed to think when you run away like that! I thought you'd learnt your lesson from the last time."

"DONT YOU DARE BRING THAT UP!" Ponyboy yelled. He hated being reminded of what happened in the past.

"C'mon you two, let's just talk about this." Sodapop tried to diffuse the situation, but was equally as furious. He knew how much this date meant to Y/N.

"Stay out of it Soda, you've done enough already." Pony continued to yell and he stormed off to his room. Both Darry and Soda were silent. Ponyboy had never risen his voice to Soda before.

"What did he mean by that?" Soda and Darry were both confused at Ponyboy's sudden turn.

They both made their way back into the living room, catching the boys discussing what just went on.

"He changed his mind about Y/N pretty quick." Steve said as he got up to look towards Y/N's house out the window.

"He shouldn't have done that to her.. did you see her face? She looked heartbroken." Two-bit couldn't hold back his concern. The boys hadn't spent a lot of time with Y/N, but they enjoyed her company. Each of them saw her as a little sister. Willing to protect her.

"He's figuring himself out I guess. All of ya'll have had various girlfriends. Heck Dally you've had more than we can count! He's just at that age now. I'll talk to him about Y/N tomorrow morning." The gang all agreed with Darry and went about their seperate activities.

Y/N opened the door to her house and felt as if she couldn't breath. It was like somebody was standing on her chest and that all her senses were confused and overwhelmed. She leaned herself against the wall and started to cry as she slowly sank down.

She stayed there for hours. Y/N was thankful her parents weren't home, they don't notice much, but they would have noticed this scene.

Eventually she composed herself enough to make some dinner. Tomorrow was Monday, and she would have to see Pony and probably Norma too.

"I'll get up early and leave without them." She thought to herself. She'd never had her heart broken before, so she didn't know how to fix it, but she figured the least she could do was avoid them as much as possible.
