Sana smiled at the text, her heart fluttering when she saw those words. Of course she let out the tiniest of squeals and forgot to text back. Hyperventilating slightly as she over thought the entire message. Yes, her soulmate was texting her. She had no idea what they looked like, how they talked or anything. The only thing she knew was that she was connected to them. By some force of the universe she was connected to someone in this ugly world.
She ended up spending half an hour trying to figure out something great to say, settling on the simple phrase of 'hello' and then beating herself up afterwards for saying such a basic thing. She decided to busy herself with school work, waiting on a response from her supposed soulmate.
"You aren't texting them?" Her mother asked while knocking on her half opened door.
"I am, but they're kind of slow at replying back... So I'm just getting homework done." Sana replied, twirling her pencil in her fingers. Her mother nodded, walking into her room and sitting on her bed.
"You know... If everything really works out... You'll be out of here." Her mother chuckled.
"What do you mean?" She asked. She set her pencil down, turning in her seat to look at her mother.
"I've seen articles where the soulmates... Never meet. Things keep conflicting, some their soulmates are in completely different countries..." She frowned. "Once I had you.. I did some reading, I was afraid for this day honestly." She admitted. "I just... I want you to be happy Sana. And if things ever start to conflict in any way you know the signs?" She asked.
"No..." Sana frowned.
"Everything will somehow become darker. Your life... It just... It's not a happy time." She did her best to explain it, Sana tilted her head slightly, watching her mother wring her hands.
"It happened to you didn't it." Sana frowned.
"My sister." She sighed. "I watched her slowly turn into this woman... I didn't know who she was anymore." She frowned. "I don't want the same thing to happen to you.." She whispered.
"I don't think it will." She whispered. "But I promise to be cautious." She nodded. Her mother smiled, standing up from her daughter's bed. She pressed her lips on the top of her head before exiting the room.
"Don't stay up too late. You have school tomorrow." She warned.
"Yes mom!" Sana smiled.
Momo awoke the next morning, no new messages. She frowned, opening up the chat, seeing she had forgotten to reply. She immediately sent a message, apologizing multiple times for not replying the night prior. As she got ready, her phone dinged. She stopped brushing her teeth to grab her phone, opening it to see the number again.
Unknown #: It's okay! I got super into studying and went to bed right after.
Momo smiled, the person was into school. Or maybe college? She had no idea... She didn't even know their name... She frowned, wanting to know their name. So she sent the question.
Momo: Since we're soulmates already, what's your name?
She chuckled at her response, setting her phone back down as she continued to brush her teeth. It wasn't until she began her walk to school that her phone dinged again.
Unknown #: Sana. What about you?
Momo smiled. Sana. A beautiful name. Then it hit her. Her soulmate was female. She stopped in her tracks, causing her sister to turn back to look at her. Momo shook her head, she knew it was possible, but she just assumed her soulmate would be a guy... Momo sent her name quickly, running to catch up with her sister who had just left her behind.
Sana arrived at school, waving at her friends as she walked to her classes. Her phone vibrated in her hand, instantly she checked it.
Unknown #: Momo!
Sana sat in her seat, completely in disbelief. A woman. A woman was her soulmate. It only happened to a handful of people that she knew... She didn't think any of her friends had same gendered soulmates.. Heck, some of them went to school together. But still... None of them same gender.
"You look confused." Sana looked up to see one of her good friends, Jeongyeon, staring at her.
"Well... I am. Normally." Sana chuckled at her friend.
"True." Jeongyeon laughed. "Why this time?" She asked.
"The writing appeared yesterday." Sana spoke in a hushed whisper, she didn't want anyone to really know. "And we exchanged a bit, and then traded numbers... So I've been texting since last night.." Sana mumbled.
"That's great!" Jeongyeon smiled. "I haven't had anything yet..." She frowned while examining herself.
"You will..." Sana frowned.
"I'm just nervous that what if there's no one for me?" She sighed. Sana took her hand in hers, giving her a small smile as she quietly comforted her. "But enough about me. What's your soulmate like?" She asked.
"Well... I have no idea." Sana chuckled. "Both of us are terrible texters." She laughed. "I got so engrossed in studying that I didn't check my phone." She shrugged. "And she thought she replied last night." Sana smiled while looking at her phone.
"Wait... She?" Jeongyeon whispered. Sana nodded slowly, afraid of what to say next. "I heard Chaeyoung's soulmate is female..." She whispered.
"Chaeyoung?" Sana frowned, unable to think of who the girl was.
"Yeah, you know. The little kid." Jeongyeon pulled up her instagram account on her phone, clicking on the other girl's profile. "This chick. She's supposedly really smart so she skipped a grade. She's a year below us academically." Sana took the phone from her, looking at the girl's page.
"And how do you know her?" Sana asked.
"We're both in literacy together." Jeongyeon shrugged. "The girl is so funny." She smiled. "But her soulmate is female, we talked about it last week." She added. Sana nodded, clicking on a photo of two girls.
"Wait, she met her soulmate?" Sana asked while showing her the photo.
"Oh yeah! They met up." Jeongyeon smiled. "Isn't she pretty?" Jeongyeon clicked on the tag, bringing them to a private account. "Fuck. It's private." She frowned.
"What's the bio say?" Sana leaned over her desk to look at the bio.
minariguin - happy as a penguin
"Well. At least someone I now know at this school has the same gender soulmate.." Sana sighed.
"What do you think happy as a penguin means?" Jeongyeon asked. Sana shrugged her shoulders as their teacher walked in. She wondered if she could find her soulmate's social media accounts.. She just needed a few things.
