I'm swimming. It's dark and it's suffocating. But I realize this isn't water. It's dark and I can still breathe, though a little hard. Its hard to tell where I am. I try to make my eyes adjust but they just don't. I can't see anything, there's no light and I can't touch anything . I reach out my hands to grasp at something only to take a hold of thin air. I try again and again flailing my arms around desperately. It's getting harder to breathe by the second and I can't recall where I am. Maybe I'm dead. It would be better like that anyway. I wouldn't have to worry about anything. There's a lump in my throat now. It's getting bigger and bigger and harder and harder to bring air into my lungs.
And then light pours in. And I'm sitting up. I'm in bed. In a very large bed, in a very large room, and presumably a very large house. I'm still struggling to put air into my lungs as I realize I am, in fact, not dead. My hands are clutching my chest and the white sheets surrounding me. I can feel my breath even out after a couple of minutes, not needing to take my pills.
My mom bursts in through the door as I'm putting the second pill under my tongue. "Sweetie! You're awake!! How are you? Are you okay? Do you feel anything out of the ordinary? Any pain?" She's ranting and she won't even let me answer a single question,"do you want to go see-"
"Mom, I'm fine really. I think I just need some rest." She smiles a sweet and gentle smile and I can tell she's been crying a bit. Her nose is red and her eyes puffy. I wonder how long she's been crying and how long I've been unconscious.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes mom in fine really. What time is it by the way?"
"Sweetie it's the next day. You were unconscious for about 12 hours. It's almost eight am now."
"Oh," is all I can say. I wonder where David and his son are. Whatever his name was.
As if sensing my curiosity, my mom says,"David and Jason went to get some breakfast hoping you'd be awake by the time they got back. They'll be back soon enough."
"Okay," I nodded. I just wanted to go back to sleep and I was about to, until my stomach decided it had gone deprived of food for long enough. How long has been since I last ate? Three days? Either way I needed food in my system. And right on cue we heard the large front door open and David shouting, "were home!!! We have breakfast come eat!!"
"C'mon sweetie lets go eat, you need it," she grabs my arm left arm and helps me out of bed and onto my feet. At first it's that swimming feeling again but after standing for a bit longer, I steady myself and walk slowly out of my room. Walking down the stairs is a pain in the ass, but eventually I make it downstairs with my mom still holding me tight.
David and... Jason? Were already sitting at the table, though there were no plates set up and no drinks and no silverware. I squint my eyes at them as my mom sits me down across from David. I'm weak and instead of sitting I fall into it and slump with my back mostly in the seat instead of my butt. David and his son just look at me weirdly like I don't know how to sit properly, though barely being able to move on my own, I'm questioning it too. My mom walks into the kitchen and brings out four plates and the appropriate amount of silverware and drinks. How she's able to carry them all in one trip amazes me. She sets them up at the table and then sits down next to with a loud, "Let's dig in everyone!!!"
I try sitting properly but fail for the most part. My mom helps me and I'm able to get my butt on the seat properly, though I'm still crouching. The trays of food they brought consist of waffles and pancakes and some fruit cups with yogurt. My mom, knowing me the best, automatically grabs two waffles and puts them on my plate with some fruit on top and, of course, syrup. I dig in immediately not even waiting for Anyone to get tiene own food.
David looks at me, disgust clear in his face and voice "you're eating like a pig. You didn't even wait for anyone! Learn some manners young girl."my mom gapes at him with wide eyes and is about to say something when I cut her off. "Then get your food faster, no one ever said I had to wait for you." There's food still in my mouth and I'm starring him dead in the eye. I see Jason stifle a laugh before clearing his throat. My mom looks at me and then at David. She doesn't say anything and instead reaches for a yogurt and fruit cup and eats silently. David is astonished to say the least. He's starting wide eyes at me and has a hand mid air where he moved to get some food for himself. I'm still starting into his eyes and I stuff another piece of waffle into my mouth, relishing in the feeling of a crunchy waffle and sticky syrup and bittersweet fruit in my mouth. Like time stopped and started again, he started moving again and for the rest of breakfast, it was dead silent. Like someone died. I silently wish it was me. Or David.
