Hyler

As I snuck back into my bedroom window, my light turned on. By shock, my landing wasn't good and I fell on my ass. As I stood, I saw my mom standing in my doorway. "Guess I don't have to ask where you've been." I rubbed my butt and said, "I had to see him. To make sure he was okay." She nodded, "Is he?" "Physically, I think he'll be fine, but thanks to me opening my big mouth, I may have ruined his life." I went to sit on my bed and my mom joined me. "How so?" She asked putting an arm around me. "He got hit by to bombshells at the hospital and I set them off." My mom squinted her eyes. "Explain." I told him his girlfriend has been cheating on him with his best friend. Then turned around and told him his dad's been having an affair with his secretary."

My mom's eyes widen, "You had visions of this?" I shook my head. "Then how did you know all that?" I shrugged, "I just felt it. Like a feeling." She quickly stood when I said that. "How long have you been able to do that Hyler?!?" She asks frantically. "Just today I guess. Why?" She pressed her palm to her forehead. "You can't see that boy anymore. I won't allow it." Wha—what? Why?!?" I said standing myself now. "Because I said so." She started to walk away but I grabbed her arm. "No. Not good enough. You're hiding something from me. Let's hear it mom. You know I won't drop this." She sighed as I let go off her arm. I knew I had won. "Fine. Sit, let's have a chat."

We sat back down on my bed as she spoke. "I started to suspect you were a little more special than you already were, when you told me you were having visions of just one person. That's not normal, not even for an ultimate seeker. If you're gaining more gifts by being near Paden then you're "The One"." "What's "The One"?" I asked. "The one has the power to gain up to five gifts that we know of. The vision of death, the knowledge of feeling, mind movement, teleportation, and possession. If you gain mind movement, you're definitely "The One"." Which means Paden's your key and you saving his life triggered it all. Being around him will only strengthen your power. If you get any more powerful, downers will come for you and they'll come for Paden too. Especially when they find out he's your key."

I start to twirl my hair and stare blankly at the floor. Downers are the scum of the Earth. They're the worst. They're like us, the can see deaths before they happen. But unlike us, they love it. We try to prevent deaths, they try to hurry along the process. They also like to watch it happen they get a kick out of it. "Why would downers want me if I'm "The One"?" "Once you get the gift of possession that means you can control just about anything and anyone. Usually we encourage "The One" and her key to communicate, get to know each other better so we can finally defeat the downers. But your young, and I won't lose you. You're all I have left."

I took her hand as she leaned on my shoulder. Technically, she was right, I'm all she has left. My father was killed by downers when I was 11 and my mother hasn't been able to get passed it. Neither have I, now that I think about it. "Mom, you're our leader. If I do gain another gift, you got to let me do what I have to do for me and for our people." She sniffled and said, "You know, your great grandmother, she was "The One" before you. Downers killer her and your grandfather because he was her key." I cocked my head to the side, "Wait, she was 82 when she died. She lived to be 82 as "The One". She lived happy with her husband until her death. You told me they were married for over 50 years. Why are they coming for me now, but didn't come for her till she was 82."

Mom scoffed, "It's not like they didn't try. But she had all five gifts. She made the choice though, to not use them in that way. She defended herself when she had to. They both definitely survived because they had each other." I cocked my head to the side, "So you're saying, if I have Paden by my side, we have a better chance of surviving and defeating the downers?" She shook her head, "No, I didn't mean that's what you should do. She was a lot older than you." I smiled, "I don't think that matters." She rolled her eyes and stood up, "Okay, I'm done with this for the night." She kisses my forehead like she always does and heads for the door. "Have a goodnight sleep." She said as she walked out closing the door behind her.
