A few days later, Indi and Kai were strolling down the hall, heading for Indi's locker. Indi had one hand in Kai's and the other wrapped around a warm, blessed coffee.
"That's not what I said." Indi argued.
Kai raised his eyebrows, "Then, what did you say?" He challenged.
"I just said if it came down to it, I'd probably win in a fight."
Kai laughed. "Against me?"
"Yeah!" Indi said, fully faking her confidence. She knew Kai could take her. Hello, the guy did karate and the only exercise she saw was when she danced.
In one swift move, Kai took the coffee from Indi's hand and strolled over to the nearest trash can. He held the coffee over the trash and looked back at her, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Tell the truth or the coffee goes."
Indi gasped. "Don't! Don't you dare!"
Kai grinned. "Tell the truth."
"Okay, okay, you could totally beat me!" She reached for her coffee, an expectant look on her face.
Kai smirked and pressed a kiss to her palm before handing her coffee over. Indi tried to ignore the blush the feel of his lips on her skin brought to her cheeks.
"If I let you." Indi finished. She was a glutton for punishment.
As Kai lunged for her coffee, Indi laughed and ran away, staying just out of Kai's reach until she reached her locker. She tossed him a cheeky grin and he mussed her hair up, affectionately.
Indi hadn't seen Karmen all morning and her texts had been very cryptic. Indi turned to tease Kai about something else, but her mouth dropped open and the words died on her lips when she saw Aiden walking towards them covered in splotches of different-colored paint.
"A-Aiden?" Indi asked, her eyes wide. She glanced over at Kai whose jaw had also dropped in surprise, but his lips were slowly forming a grin the longer he stared at his brother.
"Where is Karmen?" Aiden asked in a slow, dangerous voice.
"Ummm.." Indi hedged. She had no doubt that her friend had done this. It had Karmen written all over it.
"Did she finally get the best of you, Aiden?" Kai teased his brother with a laugh. Indi subtly elbowed him, trying to get him to quit laughing.
"What happened, Aiden?" She tried to make her tone light and innocent, but it was hard to fight the urge to laugh.
"When I opened my locker, paint exploded everywhere." Indi let out a surprised laugh, but she cleared her throat and recovered quickly. Aiden glared at Indi as if she'd covered him in the paint herself. "How did she even manage it?"
Kai was openly laughing and Indi nudged him with her elbow again, harder this time. She pressed her lips together to maintain her serious facade and murmured, the voice of past experience, "You never can tell."
This made Kai laugh harder and Aiden turned his glare to his twin. "It's not funny."
"Oh, it is so funny." Kai managed to get out. "You have met your match, brother."
Aiden demanded the keys to Kai's truck, so he could go get cleaned up.
"This is going to be a good day." Kai said, as he watched his brother stalk down the hall in a whirl of anger.
Indi snorted and immediately pulled her phone out to warn her friend.
Karmen texted back a bunch of laughing emojis and said: I'm not scared of him.
