Indi sat in the window seat of her living room, looking through the glass. She had an eyebrow raised curiously as she observed what was happening across the street.
"This is so weird." Karmen said, sitting across from Indi on the seat. Her eyes were also glued to the sight in front of them.
Karmen Armendariz was Indi's best friend. They were both about to be seniors at Northside High School. There were only a couple of days left in the summer break before they had to return to the daily drone of high school life.
"I know." Indi said, squinting at the family moving in across the street. "We never get new people here."
The town they lived in was tiny. Everyone knew each other and they rarely, if ever, had new people move in.
"Those guys are, like... really attractive, though?" Karmen commented, sounding like she was struggling with a diplomatic way to describe the two guys they were currently watching unload the moving truck.
Indi laughed. Karmen was right, actually. They were both incredibly tall with messy, black hair and muscular figures. They were either twins or looked remarkably similar. Indi couldn't really make out more from this distance, but she knew they were going to wreak havoc on the girls at her school.
Indi swept her auburn hair over her shoulder and rested her arms on her knees. She watched with her friend as the boys went in and out of the house. An older man, Indi guessed it was their dad from his similar dark looks, stomped out of the house. He was yelling and gesturing angrily. The two boys continued what they were doing as if he hadn't appeared. The man walked back into the house, tossing another comment over his shoulder at his sons. One of the boys shook his head while the other sent a rude gesture towards their father's back.
Indi raised her eyebrows and snorted in surprise.
"At least you'll never be bored." Karmen teased as she, absentmindedly, twisted her long chestnut hair around her finger
Indi laughed, again. "We must be really starved for entertainment if this counts as interesting."
Karmen took a swig from the soda she held in her hand. "Well, we are still sitting here."
Indi groaned and dropped her head back. "You're right. Let's get out of here."
She stood to her feet, her long frame unfolding from her position on the bench.
"Where are we going?" Karmen asked, following after her friend. "It's way too hot out to do anything outside."
Karmen was right. This summer had been brutal. Indi was wearing a tank top and shorts and she still felt sticky with sweat as soon as they walked out the front door.
"Let's go to the coffee shop." Indi decided.
Karmen tossed her a teasing smile. "Geez, you drink way too much coffee."
Returning her friend's contagious grin, Indi defended herself, "I can't help it. It makes me a nice person." She added. "Besides, I don't hear you complaining."
"And you won't!" Karmen called, as she climbed into Indi's jeep.
With her hand on the door handle, Indi tossed a last look at the house across the street. She was surprised to see that one of the boys had frozen in unloading the truck and was staring at her. She offered a small, polite smile and raised her chin in a silent greeting. He didn't make any move in response. He only looked down and returned to his task. Indi shrugged and hopped into her jeep with Karmen.
