The next day was not the first day of school, so Indi felt that she was under no obligation to look cute. In shorts and a t-shirt, she hurried to her first class. She was walking through the outdoor gardens trying to reach the building that held her first class. She had a tight grip on her messenger bag and coffee in the other hand.
As she reached for the door, a boy came running through, slamming it open. Just before it smashed her in the face, an arm shot out over her head and caught it.
"Holy sh.." Indi's eyes were wide and she was frozen in place for a moment. The door was a centimeter from her face.
She spun around, her ponytail smacking her in the face. "Hey!" She yelled, angrily, at the boy who hadn't even stopped to make sure she was okay. He ignored her and kept on running.
When she noticed who had saved her, she raised her eyebrows at him. "Thanks, Kai." She said, surprise coloring her tone.
Indi wasn't sure how she knew which one he was, maybe it was the hostility rolling off him in waves, but she was sure it was Kai and not Aiden despite the fact that he hadn't just let the door hit her. She was happy to note that his glare was not focused on her this time, but on the boy who'd so rudely almost killed her.
"Aren." She said, mimicking Kai's stance and crossing her arms over her chest. "What a jerk."
Kai raised an eyebrow and looked down at her from the corner of his eye. The edge of his mouth tilted up, but he quickly looked away and walked through the door and out of sight.
At that moment, the bell rang. Indi groaned, dropping her head back. This was going to be a great day, she could already tell.
After school Indi went to her dance class. It was in a big building that hosted a variety of different classes. There was a yoga studio, a karate dojo, a regular gym, music lessons, and her dance class all in one building. She had a dance class after school every day because she took every type of dance that they offered. During the summer, they cut it down to just ballet because the instructors would go on vacation. Today was her ballet class. She'd been working on a routine all summer for her upcoming recital and she only had a few weeks left.
Indi was dressed and on the stage, her partner close behind her. She took up her position and she felt Antonio do the same. She'd been dancing with Antonio for as long as she could remember. He was the only one that had been dancing for as long as she had and their dance was the centerpiece of the show.
As the music started, Indi let herself get lost in it. She felt Antonio move first and she followed right on beat, her body flowing with his in perfect synchronization. The pair floated on the waves of the music as they swelled and crashed. They moved perfectly together, like two halves of a whole. As the music came to a close, Indi twisted into Antonio's arms for their ending pose. She bent back over his arm, in a perfect arc. She bent one leg, pointing her toes and gracefully dropped her arms to point at the floor beneath her.
The music ended and the rest of the class clapped. Their teacher stood to her feet with a big smile on her face.
"You guys nailed it!" It was the first time they'd gotten it completely right and Indi and Antonio high-fived letting out whoops of triumph. "Okay! Now we need to work on transitions. We're still lagging in a few places. Let's run through as much of the show as we can in the time we have left."
Indi started working through her stretches as the first group took to the stage.
"Indi." Jogging over to her, Antonio whisper-shouted her name so as to not disturb the other dancers. "Would you want to meet a little earlier tomorrow? To get an extra practice in?"
"Sure." Indi agreed.
"Good, good." Antonio sighed in relief. "We could use all the practice we can get after what Mrs. Clayton told us."
"What do you mean?" Indi looked up at Antonio, confused.
"She didn't tell you?"
Indi shook her head, getting nervous. Did their dance not look as good as she'd thought?
"Juilliard scouts are going to be at the recital." Antonio told her with a huge grin.
Her mouth dropped open as butterflies took flight in her stomach. "Oh, no." She put her hands to her stomach. "Now, I'm nervous."
Antonio laughed. "Don't be. We're going to practice and we're going to kill it."
Indi high-fived him again, grinning. This was so exciting. Her parents were going to flip when she told them.
