Richie grabbed his hand and help him out of the water to go get their shirts. They dried off and made their way home. Eddie fell asleep on the phone that night. Richie didn't hang up, he just laid there looking up at the ceiling. He was... happy. Happy. He felt safe with Eddie on the other end of that phone, only one word away if he needed him. He loved Eddie. He knew he did.
"I love you, Eddie spaghetti" he whispered to the phone laying beside his head. "I love you too, Richie.." he heard faintly on the other end of the line before his eyes fluttered shut and he fell into a deep sleep. He dreamt about how safe he felt. He didn't worry about what would happen when his homophobic dad found out about his new found sexuality, no, he knew he would do what it took to protect Eddie from him. He didn't care about himself, he could take it. He loved Eddie and Eddie loved him.

That's all that mattered to him.
