The Highway

I shoved Merle's hand off my mouth, and I was out from under the car before he could stop me. I felt his hand graze my ankle, but it wasn't enough, and I was off towards the scream. It was a child, it had to be. None of the others would sound like that if they let out a scream. I watched, horrified, as Sophia, Carol's little girl, ran off into the woods with three walkers trailing close behind her.

I passed a shit ton of cars, all of them blurring together as I yanked my knife out, and prepared myself. I launched myself over the metal railing, and practically fell down the small slope down to the trees, but it didn't faze me. All I could focus on were the three walkers in front of me, and the short blonde hair of the little girl running in front of them.

"Evie!" I heard from behind me, and I vaguely recognized Dean's voice yelling my name from back on the highway but I didn't stop. I finally was in reach of the closest walker, and I lunged forward, and plunged my knife up into the back of its skull. It toppled forward and I yanked the knife out, and lunged for the next one. It had been turning to face me, so the knife was lodged into its temple instead of the back of the skull. When it fell, I turned to look for the other one, but felt my heart sink when I couldn't see where it, or Sophia were.

'Cas!' I practically screeched the prayer, and half second later, Cas was standing next to me, a concerned hand on my shoulder as he looked at the bodies in front of me.

"Where is she Cas?" I hissed, not bothering with any pleasantries, and he closed his eyes. He looked like he was hurting himself focusing so hard, but it made sense since she hadn't prayed to him and he didn't know her well at all.

"I... I can't...." He muttered, shaking his head, and my glare intensified.

"Castiel, find her. She's a little girl. Her name is Sophia. She doesn't deserve to die like this. She should be close. Please...." I trailed off, my voice finally breaking. He sighed, and it was quiet for a long moment. And then his grip on my shoulder tightened, and I felt my stomach turn inside out, and my eyes shut instinctively and when they opened again, Sophia was backed up against a tree, with the final walker advancing on her. She was crying, and I didn't waste a moment.

I sprinted forward, and tackled the walker that had reached forward enough to grab ahold of her shirt. I heard a rip, but paid no mind to it as I plunged my knife in the eye socket of the ugly bastard underneath me. When the black, thick blood spurted up at my face, and I could smell the rot, along with the already nauseous feeling from teleporting with Cas without prep, I turned to the side, and vomited right next to his head.

When I was done, I looked behind me to make sure Cas and Sophia were still there, and they were. I wiped my mouth, watching as Cas ran his hand over the cuts and scrapes she had accumulated during her sprint through the trees, while the tears silently streamed down her face.

"Are you okay? No bites or anything right?" I checked, standing up to do my own check of the girl. She met my eyes, shook her head, and then dissolved into sobs. I practically choked on air as she fell forward into my arms, clinging to my body. I don't remembering ever speaking to this girl, and here she was, sobbing into my arms.

"It's okay. You're okay now." I tried to say, but the sobs didn't decrease in the least. I flicked my eyes to Cas, unsure what to do, but he just smirked at me and then his eyes glazed over.

I watched as he received a message, and when his eyes cleared again, he was grimacing.

"Your brothers would like you to return now. They are very anxious." He said simply, and I knew that Dean had probably cussed him out in his prayer, and I almost felt bad for him.

"Right." I mumbled. I looked down at the crying girl in my arms, and decided that it wouldn't be the greatest idea to have Cas teleport us, wouldn't want to make her feel worse. So... I crouched a little, giving me just enough leverage so that when I wrapped my arms around her waist and lifted, she instinctively wrapped her lang gangly legs around my waist, and moved her arms up to my shoulders. And then I was walking through the woods, carrying this gangly little sobbing girl through the woods.

"Which way Cas?" I asked, not sure where we had ended up when he teleported us. He pointed, and I turned to the left, following his directions. Hopefully, nobody would be too pissed that I ran off after her, and hopefully her mom wasn't freaking out too much.

It took ten minutes of walking to reach the edge of the trees, but I could hear the yelling two minutes out.

"Would y'all shut up? You're gonna bring the walkers down on us. I could hear y'all all the way back there." I growled, as I hesitantly started to climb the small hill leading up to the railing, still holding the now sleeping Sophia in my arms.

It was more difficult now, since she wasn't helping any, and I hand to move my grip to the bottom of her thighs to keep her in place. It was silent, and I just realized it when I glanced up and everyone was staring at me.

"What?" I asked, a little bit amused, and then Dean was leaping over the railing and pulling me into a bone crushing hug, and then Carol's crying started.

"Oh my God you found her. My little girl! Oh Sophia!" She was saying, but she didn't come to take her daughter from my arms. Instead, it was Dean who took the little girl so that I could step over the railing, and then I took her back and turned to face her mother, who had her hands over her face as she sobbed, and I couldn't help but be a tad disgusted that she hadn't gone running into the woods to protect her daughter.

"She's fine. No bites or scratches. Where should I put her? Got all tuckered out after crying so hard." I practically spat at the woman, and when she finally met my eyes, I wanted to cringe. This woman... she is so weak.

"You can put her in the RV. I'll watch over her there." The soft and kind voice of the old man, Dale, rang out behind me, and I glanced over my shoulder at him. I gave a short nod, and turned without another word to bring the poor girl into the RV.

She wouldn't last long with a mother like that.

Hell... if I hadn't gone after her, if Cas wasn't an angel, I doubt Sophia would be alive right now.
