Usually, I slept in because of recurring nightmares, however, I went to bed early instead because of my newfound job. I had the usual dark dreams and woke up with sleep paralysis, but after getting up to shower and eat I was on my way to the manor, yawning a bit and swishing my cup of coffee around in the cup. Coffee wasn't that great, but if I added enough caramel and sugar it worked fine for me. It would help keep me awake to have something to drink. I arrived at the manor and swiped my card, going inside and heading up to the lab, getting there a little early to see that flug wasn't around yet. I didn't know where he could be so you sat down to wait for him, looking through a clipboard on his counter that read 'Daily schedule'. I thought it was strange, but he was probably a bit high maintenance for schedules and order. It would make sense. I'd been there for just about five minutes when the doctor came in, looking surprised.

"Y/n! I didn't expect you to be early." He walked over to the table, setting down his own empty coffee mug.

"Eh, at least if I'm early I can be settled in by the time you need me to start working. Who's dementia?" I'd seen the name on the paper, curious who that would be.

"Oh, she's..someone else who lives here. Please try not to engage, she's not exactly good at listening." He seemed a little exasperated just thinking about her.

"Fair enough, I usually avoid people anyway, I'm sure she'll just look right over me if I'm not interesting." I was confident in this, but Flug didn't confirm this. Instead he started pulling out some vials and various chemicals, instructing you on what he'd need help with. It reminded me of middle school science classes, so it was fairly easy and in a way mindless. I could've spent hours doing this.

Dr. Flug POV

She was very quiet, and surprisingly so was the lab. None of this had anything to do with what I was supposed to be getting from her, but I knew that would be a long term goal. People don't exactly just open up about past issues usually. She made a good assistant though and I needed one with Dementia constantly scaring off the others. I really hoped she wouldn't do that to this one. She was actually sane and in this place sanity was a welcome change. Blackhat has been interested by what her past could be too, probably just to see if he could add more power to the corporation. It wasn't surprising. The only thing that bothered me was how dangerous this girl might be if she had completely disappeared six months ago after being locked up for four years. That usually isn't a good sign.

Reader POV

Working with Flug was honestly probably the most enjoyable day I've ever had. By lunchtime Flug and I were elbows deeps in a project when I heard a rattling in the vent. I knew someone was in there, it was hard to miss the two eyes looking out of it. However, when I looked over, I got the same sensation of something like danger approaching. When the vent popped open I twisted around to the side, watching a person with bright green hair sprawl on the floor with a faint 'oof' sound.

"...hello." I sounded a little bland even to my own ears, but the person righted themselves quickly and turned, smiling wider than most.

"Hey, are you the new girl?" I could practically feel Flug gesturing wildly behind me, turning to see him attempt to cover it up before turning back.

"Yeah, name's y/n, you?" I kept my hands in my pockets, looking over the strange individual before me.

"Dementia, and you're not here for Blackhat, are you?" I could see a loaded question from a mile away, but she wasn't very subtle either. It was clear she had some interest in the man I'd yet to meet, and that was fine with me. She could have him.

"Nope, all yours mate. I'm just here to help out Flug in the lab." She settled a little and stuck out her tongue, not seeming too bad when placated.

"Ha, now we have two nerds. Are you gonna live here too?"

I shook my head, propping myself back on the counter. "Nah, but I live up the road a trip, you could drop by if you're in the area," I offered, figuring it was a good branch for friendship. Or something like that, hell if I know what friendship really is after so long.

She snickered a bit and crawled back into the vent, looking very much like a lizard. "Maybe I will. Seeya nerds!" She disappeared and I turned to Flug, jutting a thumb back towards the vent. "Does she just crawl around the vents all day?"

"Pretty much," he responded. "That or play pranks on people. Sorry about her."

"Why? All she did was call me a nerd. For me it's not much of an insult because a lot of people are nerds now, and it's only used as a real insult by people too weak minded to make something better." Besides, there were much worse things that I've been called, nerd is almost a compliment.

"...I really wonder what Blackhat will think of you." He said suddenly, just staring at me.

"Why? I'm not exactly special."

"No, but you're...strange. I-in a good way! He really hates idiots so he might...actually tolerate you." That seemed to be about as close to praise as Flug had ever gotten, and I wouldn't expect any more for myself.

"I can do tolerated. Better than hated." He nodded in agreement, and we spent the rest of the afternoon finishing a blueprint for an invention. I did the drawing part and he did the math part, since he knew it better and I could use a compass and straightedge for most parts. It was actually surprising when the clock rang for the time to go home. I'd even forgotten I had a home to go to by then.

"Wow, time sure flies," I said, picking up my coffee cup from this morning.

"Yeah, but hey, we got a lot done today! It usually isn't this productive. Usually Dementia is bothering me all day."

"Guess she went off to bother 5.0.5 maybe?" Flug nodded and shook his head, packing away his stuff.

"Yeah...oh well. See you tomorrow y/n?"

"Yep, same time tomorrow. Have a goodnight doctor." I waved as I headed out, passing the same portraits of Blackhat and paused just to remember what he looked like again before heading home. With any luck I'd never meet the apparently terrifying man. Then again, I'm not known for luck. I'm known for being accident prone. I went home and settled in for the night quickly, calling Rockmon briefly to let him know how the first day went and then I went to bed, feeling a little better for having done something with the day. I could get used to this.
