It's really strange not having Warren to talk to. Not even a call or text. We'd even call at night before I went to bed just to find some peace. Dementia has helped, hanging out in my room on the couch. She seems to enjoy how squishy it is instead of sleeping on the lab table. I just wish I knew where Rockmon went. I've been running tests with Flug in the lab on my abilities, since my decreasing medication stores are becoming worrisome. According to him my main problem is that it's all subconsciously activated. I don't know I'm putting in that much effort. Kind of like when someone goes to pick up a can of soda they thought was full and it was mostly empty. It gets brought up very suddenly because they put the necessary effort into what they expected and it was too much. The only real problem for me so far is the pain that's started to creep in. My legs hurt all the time, and I don't think regular pain killers will do the trick for it. I think I'll bring it up to Flug after this mission.
Black Hat sent us on another trip, this one more infiltration than fighting. We were supposed to get some old records at a medical facility just across the water. I'm not exactly keen on it, for obvious reasons. But it's night time and we have Dementia. There's no door that can stand in her way. We parked the Hat themed shuttle and made our way across the large lawn to the facility, managing to avoid most of the sprinkler system. I was partnered with Dem and Flug with 5.0.5, as Dem and I get along far better.
"Hey, Flug, What are we looking for exactly," I asked, watching him use a laser to cut a hole into the wall we were against.
"A records room of some type. You have your map and ear com?"
I nodded as we stepped through, tugging on my hoodie and looking at the map. I'd made a small update to my wardrobe, keeping the hoodie but wearing shorts and leggings beneath, thick padded boots meant to lessen any excess force in my legs.
"Yeah, you're taking the north end and we're doing the south?"
"Right," he responded, taking out his map, "I turned the cameras to a paused state remotely, but we'll need to be quick. If it's like that too long they'll notice the loop eventually."
"Got it. Dem, you listening?"
She perked up from her distraction, having been looking in the various windowed doors. "Yep, get in, break stuff, get out." She beamed, and I just smiled and nodded.
"Yep, close enough. Keep you posted Flug." He seemed concerned but Dementia and I ran off, checking down the various halls.
"So..how's the leg thing going?" She asked, scuttling over the walls as I jogged beside her, reading the map carefully.
"Eh, legs aren't broken yet. I think that's good. Left turn." I skidded around the corner, Dementia now above me on the ceiling.
"Right, but can you do it whenever you want?"
"Well, no, not yet..kinda worried about something else though."
"What is it?"
I slowed down a bit, looking at the map and the various hallways branching off. "It's just..I have this friend and he's missing..and I know he wouldn't just run off, so..something has to be wrong."
She leaned over my shoulder, tongue sticking out a bit. "So go find him."
"I can't. I'm obligated to stay with you guys because, well, you gave me a safe home and you're helping me. Can't just run off."
"Then tell Flug. He could probably find him with his nerd knowledge."
"Maybe..I think we're going right." Now isn't the time for this sort of discussion, Dem could distract herself enough as it is. We continued down the hall and found a room labeled Personnel Records. I tapped the com in my ear, of course shaped like a Black Hat. I suspect the man really is a narcissist, among other things.
"Hey, I found a room about personnel, who are we looking for again?"
Flug answered in a hushed tone, probably in a compromising area. "Madame Mentality, aka, Alecia Walker."
"Got it." The hero was someone affiliated with the heroic medical league, and most likely had worked with Medic Man at some point if I had to guess. I also find it a little bizarre they're both a double M based name.
I crept into the room with Dem and she went looking for the files, while I went to a computer to see if I could find anything hidden within. I used something very old, MedicMans username and code, and I'm surprised they weren't changed by now honestly. I logged in and looked through the files the establishment had on its staff, and I was surprised when I found one labeled Rockmon W. I couldn't resist clicking the file and was kind of shocked by what I found.
Warren Rockmon, a former back alley doctor, with powers that could create chemical compounds to nullify powers. He had been 'rehabilitated' in the same facility I was and began working as a staff member shortly before I arrived. It made sense. Too much sense. His sympathy to me, his want to leave. His surprising medication wonder that calmed my power. It was...upsetting. He lied to me. He said he was a normal person. That he just worked there and couldn't stand the treatment anymore. I felt betrayed, and overwhelmed. I didn't know Dementia was talking to me until she turned me around physically.
"Hello! Earth to y/n!" My eyes widen, staring at her like a deer in headlights.
"Um...yeah?"
"Come on, we got what we need."
I looked at the file she held and blinked, tapping my mic. "Hey, Flug, we got the file, meet you at the entry point."
I didn't really hear his response, I just took Dementia's arm and sprinted to the exit, not wanting to be here anymore. She didn't say anything, I think, just followed behind me. When Flug and 5.0.5 joined us they had something too, but I didn't see what it was. We got out quickly before we were caught and headed home.
It was only when I was almost asleep that night, staring at the ceiling of my wall apartment, that I realized I never logged out of the computer at the facility.
