Chapter 7.1: - No it's not!

...I woke up.
Still feeling tired and every move hurts. I felt my whole body aching. I opened my eyes, looking around searching for Eliza and Angelica. "Eliza?", I said with a cracking voice. I must have lost a lot of blood. "Alexander!", Eliza said. Her eyes were tearing up. Now I noticed that she was sitting on a chair next to my bed with a small quilt laying on her knees. "Please don't move! You lost a lot of blood. The doctor said you almost died but weren't willing to. BUT don't you dare to play with your life again!!! Next time you do, I'm gonna shoot you, I promise.", her voice began to get more confident. I smiled. It would be my pleasure. I mean, that would be fair enough." She giggled. "Where is your sister?", I asked with a more and more quieter voice. I remember that she was sitting next to my wife. "Oh sure. She was in need of a small break from sitting and took a walk. I'm sure she will be here again in a minute." A soft smile adorned her face.
I am grateful that I'm alive. No more duels for me!
This brought me to my next thought. Burr! I'm curious what he would think if he saw me still alive. Hah, I'm gonna beat his goddamn attitude out of him! Well, Thomas is president now, Burr's just the vice. I couldn't humiliate him more! ... A quiet voice in my head whispered to me. OH WAIT! That was me. I'm a fool.
I heard someone screaming my name: "ALEXANDER!!! Your best frenchiest man is in da house! Salut, mon ami." Lafayette seemed happy. "Salut, Laf! It's good to see you here." , I said with my voice cracking, still feeling the pain. "What a pitiful adventure! Can't speak for Burr, of course.", he said. Nodding, I noticed there was something else Lafayette wanted to say. "Well... Alex, why did you raise your pistol to the sky?", he had me. "I-I...", I stammered unsettled by this question, "I wanted to put this all to an end. You know, he was my best friend. And my son died there, raising his hand up to the sky.", I remember our conversation before Philip left:

"Where is this happening?", I asked him. "Across the river, in Jersey.", he said. "Everything is legal in New Jersey...", and then I gave him my advice. "Stand there like a man until Eacker is in front of you. When the time comes, fire your weapon in the air. This will put an end to the whole affair." Well and then he got shot. Mr. George Eacker shoots at my son!
"To end it. Didn't ever expect Burr would shoot.", my eyes were tearing up. "It's okay Ham. I understand your actions. Everyone does!", he smiled. "Don't worry, take a rest now. I'll see you in the next day at the white house, okay?" I nodded.
I fell asleep again.

Hours later, I woke up and felt much better, like I could fight in a war again! But there's no need to, anymore. Well, let's stand up and go writing a new story.
Going down the stairs, I heard to beautiful voices talking: "We should go upstate. This time with Alexander!", Angelica said to Eliza. "I hope he will finally join us and be there for his children." In need to answer, I said: Of course, I'm coming with ya. I can't miss seeing my children growing up!"
I saw Angelica and Eliza smiling and suddenly I felt a warmth in my heart. Is this what a legacy is meant to be? If it is, I'll take it as it is. Life is as important as dying someday, so bereaved have something they can tell further and further, like a never ending story..

Years later, I see my children grow older. I look at them with pride! Seven children. Philip Schuyler Hamilton, who's in heaven, Angelica Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton Jr., James Alexander Hamilton, John Church Hamilton, William S. Hamilton and Eliza Hamilton Holly.
Which I've never got to see grow up if I really died on January 31 in 1795.
