Chapter 18. / Yibo - Without me!

Yibo has completed the first week as an apprentice. It was a strenuous week and he was glad that he could use this weekend to relax. Or at least it was planned. For one thing, the close relationship between Zhan and the other agent, whose name he had already forgotten again, didn't go out of his mind. Were they really just colleagues and friends? Or was there more to it than that? Could he perhaps be more to Zhan? Could Zhan leave him for this other man?

Special Agent Tao Long had told him that the two had known each other for many years and that Zhan had been under his command for a year when Zhan was in South Korea for a year because of his training as a Special Agent. Yibo had the feeling that the two of them, at least during this one year in South Korea, were not only colleagues. But he also told himself that it was a long time ago and he had to trust Zhan. But he was much more worried about Zhan, because of his strange cousin. Zhan didn't seem to like her hanging on his arm like that, apparently she did it more often. And when Yibo saw this, he wanted to pull her away from him and tell her to keep her hands off his husband.

Yibo sat down in the living room and wrote his report, about his first week of training. He was not quite finished when the bell rang. His family came to visit him and complained to him that he hadn't even reported in that week. And they also came to discuss the upcoming family vacation with him. Yibo was astonished because he had completely forgotten that. And now that he was an apprentice, he couldn't just take a vacation. Besides, he made it his goal not to waste time learning and becoming a good agent. He wants to make Zhan proud of him.

Dad: Well son, only one more week, then we'll go on holiday.

Yibo: About that. Without me. I'm an apprentice now and I don't get vacation just like that.

Dad: But you promised we would go together.

Yibo: Yes. But I was not an apprentice then. And honestly, after everything with Zhan, I don't feel like going on a trip anymore. I want to concentrate on my work right now and see if I can win Zhan back. That's my top priority.

Stepmother: Why are you running after him? He left you, and you should find someone else.

Yibo: Why do you want me to find someone else?

Stepmother: No reason. I don't want you to be alone.

Sister: You are so weird, mom. Can't you see that Yibo only has eyes for his Zhan?

Brother: Right! Stop pressuring Yibo. And the two are not divorced yet and as long as Zhan doesn't say he wants a divorce, there is still hope.

Stepmother: Hope? We will see!

Dad: Stop it.

Was it just Yibo or did his stepmother always rage against Zhan and he just never noticed? Strange that he had an eye for it now. He sat there quietly watching his family. The way they talked and moved and looked. Was that what Tao Long meant when he told Yibo that some day this will become an automatic process of observation and analysis? Because that's all Yibo was doing right now, and that's what Zhan had done many times. Zhan often sat there and looked at everything around him. Every movement, every moment, everything. Yibo had only been in the monitoring center for a week and it was already beginning to bear fruit?

While his family continued to discuss, Yibo wrote a text message to his instructor, explaining what he had just come to. Tao Long wrote him a short, concise answer, "I told you so." Yibo felt happy. At first he thought the old man was too old to teach him anything, but that was not true. And Zhan was right to listen to him, because everything he says can have meaning. Yibo was also fascinated by the way Tao Long explained everything to him. Not stoically saying do this and do that, but based on his experiences as a young agent. He told him how he learned everything, what mistakes he made and what successes he achieved. He simply made it exciting so that Yibo never got tired of listening to his instructor. Like a grandpa telling stories you can learn from.

He would have loved to write Zhan about his knowledge, but Zhan would certainly not have been interested, so he let it go. Maybe he would write it down like a kind of diary of his successes and failures and give it to Zhan later. Maybe he would read it and be a little proud of Yibo.

His family was still discussing it and Yibo had listened to it long enough.

Yibo: It's enough now! Brother, sister, thank you for your support. Mom, I expect you to stop constantly speaking ill of my husband. I don't care if you like him or not. I love him and I will certainly not give up on him and find someone else! For me, there was and there is only Zhan. And Dad, don't you think you should say something as head of the family?

His family looked at him with amazement, even Yibo was amazed. He never thought he would talk to his family like that. He was always afraid they would resent him, but just now he didn't care. They should just stop talking about his marriage to Zhan. After all, they were partly responsible for Zhan leaving him. They knew he wanted to be alone with Zhan when he came back from his long mission, but they showed up and made noise. They had even torn him out of his sleep and shouted at him. Yes, Yibo should have said something at that point, but he was completely overwhelmed. But now it was different.

Tao Long had told him on the second day of his training, "In difficult situations you have to stay calm. Take a deep breath and exhale and only then act. Don't be afraid to speak your mind, but stand by it and be steadfast." Another thing he had learned that he could use in his daily life.

After the others found their composure again, Yibo suggested a walk. He suddenly felt like taking a walk in the park. But before that he wrote to Tao Long that he finally had the courage to stand up to his stepmother and father. Tao Long wrote him that he was proud of him and that he should continue to do so. Yibo was feeling really great right now.

What he had not expected was that he would run into Zhan of all people there. Zhan and his colleagues. Yibo was getting ice cream for his family when he ran into them.

Seo Joon: Hey husband of Zhan, how are you?

Yibo: Um, yeah good. And yourself?

Seo Joon: Oh now that that annoying goat is gone again, are we doing great or Zhan?

Zhan: Hi Yibo. Yeah, we're doing great. What are you doing here? Hanging out with your family?

Yibo: Hmmm, a little bit.

Zhan: And how is your work going? All good?

Yibo: Yes, fine. Working with Tao Long is fun. And I noticed today how I automatically observed and analyzed everything around me. And the advice Tao Long gave me even helps me in dealing with my family.

Zhan: Really? That's great, I'm really happy for you. I am proud of you.

Yibo: Really?

Seo Joon: Sure he is and you can be proud of yourself too. You seem to learn fast. Who knows, maybe we'll all get together on a mission, so it's good to know that you've been trained well.

Yibo: Thanks. I will try my best.

Zhan: I know. Keep up the good work. You can do it. And it looks like your family misses you already.

Yibo: Hmmm, okay. You guys have fun.

Seo Joon: Ah it has nothing to do with fun. We work! Your Black Agency has simply assigned me. So much for my vacation.

Zhan: Let's go before we lose sight of our target. There's no camera here, so let's go. Goodbye Yibo, be proud of yourself, I am too. See ya!

Yibo: OK, yeah. See you, good luck.

Yibo just felt great. He saw Zhan and could tell him his news himself. And on top of that, he was praised by his husband and his colleagues. More than that, Zhan told him he was proud of him. Yibo just felt like he could fly.
