Chapter 33 Zhan - Wirepuller and Mole

They followed the tunnel and made only slow progress. The last time they had noticed anything from the house above them was more than twenty minutes ago. It was a loud bang that made everything shake, even down here.

Zhan suspected the security system had activated the self-destruct. Before that, he hadn't believed that such a thing really existed in this house, but after feeling the detonation even in this tunnel, he was sure that this massive explosion could only come from the security system.

It took them a total of forty minutes to reach the end of the tunnel. They were now in some kind of cave. Equipped with all the gadgets. Bottles of water, canned food, clothing, telephones, beds and even a bulletproof car were there.

They rested a little, had a drink and the boss informed the HQ about the incident. He used one of the secure phones that were here and called the chief's office.

They were to stay in hiding and wait for further instructions.

"He said they were going to check what data Zoey Meng had accessed in the past. Fortunately, the search history can't be erased. Let's see what comes up." Said the boss and put the phone on the table in front of him.

"Yibo, what are you thinking about?" Asked Zhan, who saw that Yibo had something on his mind.

"Actually nothing more. Or yes, yes, something is on my mind Zhan. If Zoey wants revenge on Jiang Cheng, why is she after us too?" He asked.

"Well, I assume she has a deal with the shadows. Remember, the Mike's got it in for me personally. So automatically, you're a target for him, too. And I think once they get rid of us, they'll go after Jiang Cheng. Zoey also knows that he and I have known each other for a long time and we were once best friends, so she assumes that if anything happens to me it will hurt Jiang Cheng and lure him back to Beijing." Explained Zhan.

When the phone rang an hour later, the boss answered it and walked away a little so he could talk in peace.

After half an hour their boss came back and explained what they had found out.

"So apparently Zoey Meng really has something to do with the shadows. The data history shows that she has retrieved all information about both you, Jiang Cheng and Seo Joon. Also the data about the access days, where we actually wanted to take down the shadows. She not only retrieved the data around the house, but also printed it out. She didn't show up at the office today. She called in sick. They sent a team to her home, but they couldn't find her, but they found lots of files she printed and created. They're still processing the information. So we're to stay here today, and we'll be informed tomorrow how to proceed." Explained the boss.

Zhan was pretty sure that he had kept some information from them. Surely this was not all and a faint premonition came over him.

"What else? That's not all!" Said Zhan seriously.

"She also retrieved the information about your families. Don't worry, a team has been sent to them and they will be safe." He explained to Zhan.

Zhan wondered how he, or even Yibo, should stay calm. After all, it was about their families. Even though Zhan hated Yibo's stepmother after Yibo told him the truth about that night, he did not want her to be in danger.

But at the same time, they couldn't leave their hiding place. His boss had taken the car keys and they were just too far away from everything. There was nothing but woods and fields nearby. It would take them hours to even find the next village.

Besides, Yibo wasn't fit enough because he had been fighting a persistent cold for days. Again and again he had a fever, so Zhan even carried the tablets for Yibo in his pocket. Considering their current situation, this had probably not been too bad.

The cave had been more like a huge hangar once they had found the light and turned it on. Cold and drafty it was here and Zhan hoped that Yibo's cold wouldn't get worse when they were here. He had rolled Yibo up in some blankets and never let him out of his sight for a second.

Zhan had no idea when it started that he was always so worried about his husband, but he didn't care. He knew himself, for everything and everyone he was the tough guy, the Special Agent without mercy. Only for Yibo this did not apply. Sometimes he annoyed Zhan by calling him his Wifey. And often Zhan felt the same way. Yibo had changed him as he changed Yibo.

The two had become close again during their time in Germany. And since then, their feelings for each other were stronger than ever. And that's why Zhan cared about his husband. He was afraid of losing Yibo again. At the same time, Zhan knew that if something happened between them, he would separate from him and never go back, even if it would destroy him.

However, Yibo was also no longer the naive family obsessed man from before. Yibo was again the strong man who knew exactly what he wanted, whom Zhan had met. And at the same time he had learned a lot. So he was an improved version of his former self.

"Men, I've just received a text message. Apparently, Mike is not the leader of the Shadows. It's Zoey Meng! She's the mastermind behind everything, not just the mole." The boss called to them.

Somehow Zhan had already guessed this. He had realized that Zoey was not a small fish. But he didn't expect her to be the leader.

A lot of internal information on the former Shadow leader was kept in a separate folder. Along with notes on this man's relatives. Apparently, he had a sister who she must have approached and worked with to rebuild the Shadows." Explained the boss.

Zhan remembered the sister. She was only fifteen years old at the time and still attending school. She herself testified that she was afraid of her own brother. She was taken to her grandmother's house after it was discovered that her parents were also Shadows.
