Chapter 10
That was when I squealed.
Oh God! I missed her so much. I have never seen her since 8th grade because we moved away. I remembered crying so hard, even as a kid. She is truly and without a doubt the best friend anyone could ask for. Unlike most kids my age, she wanted to be friends with me because we were so alike and because I am who I was. She didn’t care that that time we barely got on with our lives as a family because dad doesn’t have a highly profitable job. She lent me things I needed, she helped me when mom was too busy and she was there, simple as that. She’s my sister at heart.
“Natty!” I screamed in delight.
“Oh my god, Tammy!” she cried, bouncing on the balls of her dainty feet. I skipped to her and hugged her so fiercely I could have crushed her ribs but she didn’t complain. “How the hell have you been?”
“I’m quite fine,” I replied once we stopped the hugging. I gave her a once over and I realized, she didn’t change much. I mean, her face didn’t change much. Her dark, wavy hair that was always in pigtails when we were kids was now cascading beautifully down her back. Her long eyelashes that I have always adored complemented her light brown eyes. And what I knew her best asset now would be her long legs. And she wasn’t even wearing heels!
“Looking good, Natty!” I said, and it’s true.
“You’re not bad yourself,” she replied as she looked at me from head to foot. Normally, I would get the urge to bitch-slap anyone who looks at me that way, but Natty was different, of course.
“You mind introducing us?”
Caden piped in, interrupting our little reunion.
I almost glared at him for that but I didn’t. “Yeah? Guys, this is Natalia Reed, my childhood best friend. And Natty, this is Caden, Wayne and Tristan,” I said as I waved my hand at each one.
She just bobbed her head. Wayne butted in. “Did you mention you’re new here?”
“Actually, I did.”
He ignored me. Natty winked at me but I didn’t think Wayne, or anyone else, noticed. “Yeah.”
“Oh, okay then.” He looked like he was thinking of something difficult which would be rare. Just kidding!
I studied him and stared at him intently which made him squirm and look at me like, “Cut it out!”
“Thank you, Tammy,” Brooke said. I thought I saw something in her eyes, something I see often on some girls. But this was different, territorial, even.
But maybe that was just my silly mind going bizarre.
“Oh, um, you mind walking with us? What is your next subject anyway?” I said. I don’t want her to think I was getting her best friend away from her. But I want to have a proper reunion with my childhood best friend.
“We have double Art, then Biology… and we have Gym as last subject,” Natalia told me as she checked a piece of paper.
I realized we have the same subjects so I asked them if they would like to have me as company.
To my surprise, Brooke complied. I’m not complaining though. So maybe I was wrong?
“I have to go now, kids,” Caden broke in my line of thoughts.
