These aren't unheard of writing tips, but they're just not things that I hear talked about that much, and I think they're actually really helpful.

1. Try to have hope and despair in every single scene (at least some).
2. Add one unexpected detail into the setting.
3. You don't need to include a scene if the reader can envision it without being told about it.
