Pain. Thats all I could feel when I slowly came to. I was confused by the sounds and the dampness until everything came rushing back. I could feel my back caked in blood.
Slowly I tried to raise myself to sit. The feeling of my breathing shot pain waves through my body. How had I gotten to this point? Why did I deserve to be stripped of everything that made me who I was and be thrown from the heavens?
It was the middle of the night. I was surrounded by trees and soaked to the bone from the rain. Where was I? How was I supposed to get out of here like this.
Slowly, but surely I was able to get to my feet. I wasn't going to let the elders best me. They wanted me to feel helpless and I wasn't going to give them that satisfaction. I knew they were watching me. Enjoying watching me struggle.
Pulling my dell up and leaving against a tree I listened very carefully. I could hear the rain hitting the leaves and some animals meandering through the maze of the forest, but in the distance I could hear a very promising noise. It sounded liked cars driving past. Not a lot, but enough that maybe I could catch someone to help me.
Determined to not show how much pain I was feeling I stood as tall as I could. The pain made me feel dizzy, but I pushed through it.
It took longer than I would like to admit for me to reach the road. I felt a small sliver of relief. I worried that no one would come for a while but to my luck as I reached the very edge of the road a car came around the bend and the driver slammed on their brakes as their headlights fell on me. With the roads being slippery from the rain the car slid and I feared they would lose control completely. Luckily, they didn't. As soon as the car was fully stopped a figure rushed out of the passenger side. The sound of heals clicking against pavement came towards me, but everything was become a blur once again.
"What are you doing out here in this storm! You could have gotten yourself killed being this close to the road." A higher female voice shrieked. As she got closer I heard a gasp escape her lips. "What on earth happened to you?"
"Please.... I need help. I... I don't know where I am." I begged. It was taking everything in me to not black out again.
"George!" The woman yelled and I heard another car door open. "Don't worry, hun. You are safe now. We are going to get you help."
I wanted to thank her, but I had no strength left to say anything. I felt every bump and turn the car made. It was agonizing.
The car stopped abruptly and all I could comprehend was the feeling of hands on me. So many hands. Bright lights took over my blurred vision and I finally let my self drift off knowing it may take some of the pain away.
When I was able to force my eyes open again I had no idea where I was. I panicked before I remembered everything that had happened. There was no one around and all I could hear was the sound of my heartbeat on the monitor. I felt dazed and wanted nothing more than to rip all the wires that connected me to the machines off. I felt like a half finished sewing project.
"Glad to see you are awake. My name is Dr. Smith. Do you know where you are miss?" A short woman asked dressed in her white coat.
"Obviously, I am at the hospital."
"Correct. Do you know why you're here?"
I knew why I was here, but I also knew that she was going to ask where my injuries had come from and I didn't have an answer for that. So, I shook my head. "Do you remember anything that happened to you?" Yes. I don't think I could ever forget. Again, though, I shook my head. "A you woman brought you in last night saying you had been standing in the road cover in mud and blood. Her and her friend rushed you here. You have some deep cuts on your back that we closed up, but it's going to be a while before they heal. Are you in any kind of pain right now?"
"I'm just feeling... fuzzy." I answered. She nodded and wrote down some things on her clipboard before coming over and studying my monitor.
"Now, we didn't find any kind of ID on you. Can you tell me what your name is? Or a date of birth?"
I wanted to laugh. If only she could comprehend my actual date of birth. She had no idea. "I... I don't know. I can't remember."
"That's alright. It will come back to you I'm sure. I will be back to check on you soon. Rest up. You've been through a lot."
