I glanced over my should to admire how my backless dress framed my new, tattooed wings. The scars on my back looked hideous to me so as soon as I was able to earn enough money I found someone willing to design beautiful, wings to cover them. If I wasn't able to have my real wings I was still going to have a reminder of why I was here. What my purpose was.
I wasn't sure how I would make it in the human world when I was well enough to leave the hospital, but luckily I was given assistance. Heather, the woman who came to me on the road, came back to see how I was doing and offer her home to me while I healed and figured out what my next move was.
That was several month ago. Now, I had a day job and was now her roommate. I gladly accepted her offer when she made it. Thankful for her kindness. I trait most mortals seemed to lack anymore. She lived in an apartment just outside the city, which made my night job easier.
When my personal items were returned to me when I was discharged somehow I found my angel blades amount them. I wasn't sure how they got there or how none of the mortals had seen the rather large knives, but I wasn't questioning it. I may have been mortal now, but I still knew what my duty was. I had to hunt down the demons and exterminate them.
It took weeks of wondering the city streets at night and watching over all the crime reports that I could get ahold of through the media before I started noticing patterns. Mainly young woman we're going missing at night clubs and turning up brutally murdered a few days later. Since then nearly nightly I went to different, popular clubs to try and catch the demons before they caught their prey.
They liked to be seduced by the mortals before having their fun. They wanted to see how much of a sinner they could make them before their death. One demon could cause several death simply by hypnotizing their mortal to do their bidding.
My task was simple. Find the demons, seduce them and then kill them as soon as possible away from the mortals. The mortals couldn't see them for what they really were so stabbing what looked to be a person in a crowded space was not a smart idea.
Exiting the bathroom I found Heather sitting on the couch with the news on scrolling through her phone. Yet another rdissaperanc was being reported. When she heard me come out she dropped her phone in her lap and faced me. I could see a look of disappointment in her eyes.
"Are you going out again?" She asked. I simply nodded while I laced up my thigh high boots. They were a perfect find because I could tuck my angle blades behind the laces and they blended in nicely. They looked like some kind of gothic accessory. "Isn't this like your fourth time going out this week? I have friends coming over for a game night tonight. Why don't you stay in and join us? It'll be fun."
"Thank you for the invite, but I have other plans. Maybe some other time." I checked myself in the mirror by the door again before grabbing my house key and tucking it in my bra where I wouldn't easily lose it.
"I know this is probably some kind of coping thing, but I am getting worried. Where are you going dressed like that all the time? Are you okay? Is someone making you do something."
"I'm alright, Heather. I promise. It's a friend from work who just broke up with her long time partner. I know I've been out a lot, but it's what is making her feel better and I don't want her going out there alone. You know how dangerous it is. Especially, if you are a woman alone." I lied. I had already lost my wings for trying to fight the demons. I wasn't going to let a human keep me from doing it too.
"Which coworker? If your so close why haven't you invited her over before?"
"Her name is... Lucy. I'll invite her over soon. How about that? Now if you will excuse me I don't want to keep her waiting."
"Fine. Just be carful, okay? There have been more people going missing recently."
"I will. Believe me if someone tries something with me they may not live to regret it." She snickered as I closed the door behind me. Oh if she only knew.
