The elderly lady behind the desk handed me my timetable and told me rather rudely to move along. I bit my lip anxiously and swallowed in fear. This would be the first school I had ever been too. And I have to admit, starting off in high school definately isn't the best start. But I suppose all those days spent in the library will just have to do.

After several days of roaming the town I eventually found an old and abandoned building that was reluctantly close to the school. So at least I wouldn't have to walk too far. I spent the days beforehand shoplifting all my school supplies, I knew what I did was wrong but in all honesty I didn't really care. Those shops make hundreds of dollars a day, will a thirty cent pencil really make a difference?

I tied my bronze hair into a mesh ponytail and seeped my emerald eyes across the school. My unusually pale skin allowed for my bright red jacket to act as a beacon in the small parking lot. Not the best outfit choice. If my being a new student didn't attract attention my jacket definately would. Thank god my jeans and converse shoes were a dull shade of blue.

I unfolded the timetable and looked for my first period.

English, with Mr. Tanner.

Hopefully all those books I read in the libraries over the years will give me a small advantage. Probably not but still. My attempts to self-educate myself probably turned out a lot worse than I would like to admit. But like I said before, anything is possible. I may be a secret, super genius. Wouldn't that be wonderful.

I stood still and watched silently as more and more students began arriving. After mustering up a small amount of courage I forced myself to ask a passing girl for directions to the English block. Being alone for so long didn't help with my no doubt atrocious social skills. After staring at me strangely for several seconds she silently pointed to the building behind me. After quickly thanking her I scurried off to the English block just as a fancy silver Volvo pulled into the parking lot.

Cars we're never really my forte so I didn't give the car another glance. I arrived at my English before the bell and waited outside as there was no one inside. I didn't want to get myself in trouble on the first day, better to play it safe than sorry. Eventually several other students arrived and stood along the corridor. A small group of girls looked at me, exchanged a quite conversation and laughed.

One of the girls from the group, a tall blonde haired, blue eyed typical teenager walked over to me. A friendly smile plastered on her face that was overly done with make-up.

"Hi! I'm Sarah! What's your name!" She asked enthusiastically, waving her hand I front of my face like a wild woman.

"I'm Melody," I said apprehensively, rather uncomfortable with the whole concept of speaking to strangers. Although I suppose it wouldn't be too bad making a few friends.

"That's nice, what's your last name?" She asked impatiently, dropping her facade of friendliness.

"Smith." I stated blandly. However unconvincing that last name was, it was the name I gave to the school. So it was the name I would have to stick by.

"Smith? You ain't related to anyone in the school are you?' She asked, narrowing her eyes at me as if daring me to lie to her. I shook my head, fearful of saying another word to her. You would think after fighting a wolf in the woods I would be able to handle small talk. But no, I guess I'm going to spend the next three years of high school as that awkward teenager that sits alone at lunch.

The girl walked away, shooting me with suspicious glares until at last the teacher came. I handed him the slip the lady at the office gave me and took a seat at the back of the room. I didn't want to attract too much attention to myself. Before the lesson began several more students marched into class.

A small girl with spikey black hair and a tall blonde boy sat next to me. I kept my eyes to the front of the room, not wanting to make a fool of myself. The teacher gave a small five minute lecture and then told us to do the several questions in our book. I opened mine and began scribbling down the answers, or at least what I hoped were the answers.

"Hi," a light music tinkle smashed me out of my thoughts and struck me with fear. Why did I think I could handle school, if I couldn't handle talking to people? It's probably only because I'm nervous, and the fact that I hadn't talked to anyone in years.

"Hi," I replied rather shyly and quietly, a small blush rising to my cheeks. She gasped silently and for the first time since the beginning of the lesson I looked at her.

She was absolutely beautiful, I had always considered myself pretty, not wanting to sound vain but it was my personal opinion. But she was like a small fairie. Or some sort of pixie. If I had any self esteem before it was definately gone now. She looked to the boy next to her and eventually turned back, smiling at me. I forced a smile and didn't look at her any longer than I needed to. I dropped my gaze and went back to my work, hoping she wouldn't want to start a conversation.

"I'm Alice, what's your name?" She asked in the same tinkling voice she held before. I began fiddling with the locket around my neck, turning it over and over. She looked at what I was holding and widened her eyes considerably. The name Melody engraved on the back, I simply assumed it was my name.

"I'm Melody." I stated, not lifting my eyes from my work.

"You're new here right? Where did you move from?" She leaned in closer, clearly not wanting to let this conversation die. I suppose I may as well get some practice with socialising. I turned my attention to her and dropped my pencil rather forcefully.

"I used to live in New York, but then me and my parents moved here." I may not have been good at socialising but I was an expert at lying when need be.

"Oh wow that's so cool! Who are your parents?" She asked strangely enthusiastically.

"My mom's an architecture and my dad's an engineer." I stated, thinking of the first occupation I could. She nodded her head solemnly and glanced down at my necklace once again.

"Where did you get that exquisite locket?" She asked not once looking at me but instead she stared intently at the locket.

"My uh parents gave it to me" I was a good lier, but her stare was making me more than uncomfortable.

"Hey would you mind sitting with us at lunch today?" She asked, her eyes full of hope.

"Oh I don't think I should." I looked over at the clock and noticed the bell would be ringing in three minutes.

"Nonsense, I'll drag you to our table if I have to!" The bell rang and before I had to chance to say anything else she grabbed her things and all but ran out the door. Well at least I may have made a friend today. Even if I didn't really want to.

I looked down at my timetable after packing up my things and read my second period.

History, with Mr. Griffen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

After history ended I walked into the cafeteria and stood in line for my food, as much as human blood tempted me I could last perfectly fine on normal food. Every now and then however, when I became slightly too hungry I may snap and find a corpse at my grip. But that was only on the rarest of occasions.

After I ordered my food, a cheeseburger and a bottle of water, Alice appeared at my side.

"Hey! Our table is just over here, come on!" And sure enough, just as she promised she grabbed a hold of my arm and tugged me over to their table at the very back of the room. I widened my eyes at the several drop dead gorgeous people occupying the table. They all stared intently at me, as if awaiting for something.

I sat down next to Alice and nibbled on my food. Too self conscious of the several eyes watching me.

"So Melody. Where did you get that necklace?" I looked up at the bronze haired boy who posed the question and squirmed under his intense gaze.

This was going to be a long lunch.
