Like the description of the book said, demonology is the study of demons or beliefs about demons. They may be human, or nonhuman, separable souls, or discarnate spirits which have never inhabited a body.

Many religions and cultures believe, or once believed, that what is now known as soothsaying, was, or is, a form of physical contact with demons.

Virtually all religions & cultures have various supernatural entities that are considered malevolent or even evil. In some cultures, these may be simply forces of nature like hurricanes. Sometimes they are entities with capabilities for destruction such as fertility gods/goddesses. And in some belief systems, they are evil spirits hellbent on making one’s life miserable.

Demons are generally classified as spirits which are believed to enter into relations with the human race. As such the term includes:

~ angels in the Christian tradition that fell from grace
~ malevolent genii or familiars
~ such as receive a cult (e.g., ancestor worship)
~ ghosts or other malevolent revenants.
