Warning: almost smut (I was going to write the whole scene but then Ij realized I can't write smut)
When Connor sat across from me at the little cafe Jared had brought me to, I could most definitely swear that my heart skipped a beat. Jared, on the other hand, doesn't seem too overjoyed to see him- actually, now that I really think about it, he seems sort of pissed. I shrug it off, though. Jared has no reason to hate Connor, it's probably just all in my head. I take a small sip of the drink Jared had ordered me, only to find out that it's my favorite on the menu. He smiles at me, winking, and I laugh, shaking my head and gently shoving him.
"So, Murphy, how are things with your weird weed vape?" Jared asks Connor, who rolls his eyes, refusing to waste his energy on a response. Jared frowns.
They say everybody has a weakness. Whether it comes to superheroes, or video game characters, or real life, that's just how it works. You could say that's Jared's weakness- lack of acknowledgment. I think it's the only thing that really scares him. Quickly, I try and open my mouth to say something, anything to save Jared's ass, but the moisture suddenly leaves my mouth and all that comes out is a strangled 'um.'
Are you serious?
Everybody turns to look at me.
"You tryna say something?" Connor asks, laughing. I force a laugh, heat rising to my face as I shake my head.
"Um, no, I'm- I'm all good, you?" I ask, my voice squeaking a bit as I internally regret every word that leaves my mouth. Jared shoots me a worried look, and Connor just laughs. Zoe has an eyebrow raised, and I can tell that she's judging me. Jared quickly pulls out his phone, and I feel mine buzz in front of me. I grab it.
Jared: hey, you good?
I type a quick response.
Yeah, can you just, like, start up a conversation?
Jared: yeah, sure
"So," Jared starts, taking a sip of his drink. I shut my eyes for just half a second, exhaling. "Have any of you guys been here? I really like the coffee." He says. Zoe nods.
"It's actually pretty good. I don't think you've been here, Connor?" Zoe says, turning to Connor, who shakes his head.
"Coffee is gross." He says bluntly, playing with one of the bracelets on his wrist.
"Well, um, I like it," I say, trying my best to pull on a smile despite the fact that I'm shaking. Connor frowns.
"Well, you guys are just fucking weird, then," Connor says, and I look at him, searching for any sign that he was kidding. He wasn't smiling, and his voice seemed dead serious. Still, I doubt he actually meant it. It's just his sense of humor. Zoe chokes out a laugh, looking at Connor. I shoot a look at Jared, who seems even more annoyed than he was before.
"What do you guys think about the full moon tonight?" Zoe asked, and before anybody else can say anything, Connor immediately scoffs.
"Who cares? It's just light."
"Werewolves, though," Jared says, grinning, and I laugh. Connor just rolls his eyes.
"Seriously?"
"What are you, on your period? I'm joking, dipshit." Jared says, frowning. Connor smiles, and even though it seems like a genuine smile, his anger shows through his eyes. Even though I'd prefer him not to be angry, especially at Jared, it's still hot.
