Alina's POV:

That night was the first time in years that I felt like I had a family, but now I'm afraid that I will lose her like I have lost everyone else that I have cared about.

The next day

I wake up and turn over expecting to see Emma still asleep, but she's not there. I instantly start to panic as the possibilities of what could have happened to her race through my mind, I call out her name but no response. I dash downstairs and start looking for her hoping that maybe she's still here before I call out her name again, but I still get no response, and just as I was about to give up looking for her in the house I hear a slight whimper. I turn around and in the corner of the room I see her, her back was up against the wall and she was slowly rocking herself back and forth as I saw tears stream down her face.

I rush over to her trying to figure out why she was crying on the floor, but as I was about to wipe her tears away with my thumb, I saw her flinch and try to move even further back into the wall when my hand got close to her face.

It took me a minute or two before I realized that she thought I was going to hit her, I moved closer to her and sat on the floor noticing she had closed her eyes tight like she was just waiting for the impact of a slap to hit her. That's when I pulled her into a hug, her body tensed up before relaxing when she realized I wasn't going to hurt her, soon she clung to me as her cries turned to full blown sobs.

I just sat there rocking us back and forth in the hug as her tears stained my shirt, neither one of us daring to speak as we just clung on to each other like if either one if us let go the other person would fade into dust. Eventually after what felt like an hour had passed Emma had stop crying leaving only the sound of soft sniffling in its place.

That's when I decided to speak, "Why were you crying?" It took Emma a few minutes before she said something "I -I  went downstairs t-to get one of the toys y-you got me when I heard you y-yell my name, and I thought that maybe I did something w-wrong and that you w-were going to hit me once you found me." Her voice cracking as she tries her best not to cry again.

"Why did you think I was going to hit you?" I ask a bit surprised by her response. "B-because the only times I've ever been yelled at was f-followed by someone hitting m-me." This time a few tears fell down her face as she spoke, I continued to rock us back and forth as I told her "Emma I promise you that even if my life depended on it I would never hit you, I wish I could've been there when you were going through this but I couldn't. So I promise this to you now, I won't let anyone hurt you ever again."

About an hour later I finally stopped rocking and stood up with Emma still in my arms as I walked upstairs. I set her down and got her some clothes for her to change into before grabbing myself some new clothes to change into. After I finished changing my clothes, I went back downstairs and started to look for something I could put on the tv for us to watch.

A few minutes later I heard Emma come down the stairs and sit on the couch behind me, she was wrapped in a soft blanket with a tiny stuffed animal on her arms. After a few seconds I had finally found something for us to watch, I pressed play on the movie and sat next to Emma on the couch with a blanket of my own wrapped around me.

We were only an hour into the movie when Emma had fallen asleep. I carefully got up from the couch in order to not wake her up, I then walked into the kitchen and started to prepare lunch for when she woke up. It was about 15 minutes later when I heard Emma wake up, I walked out of the kitchen and greeted her "Hello there sleepyhead, are you ready for lunch?" Her eyes lit up as she shook her yes. I laughed a little and went back into the kitchen to grab the plate of food I made for her before walking back into the living room to hand it to her.

After she finished eating, I put on another movie for her to watch while I started to work on cleaning the dishes. After I had finished, I joined Emma in the living room and finished watching the rest of the movie with her, but then as everything seemed peaceful there was an urgent pounding on the front door

...that at the time we had no clue it would change our lives forever ...

I hoped all of you enjoyed chapter 5 and I'm sorry I left you on a cliffhanger but this took me three hours to finish and I had no clue at fist what I wanted to do.
