She awoke in the midst of the new morning; she could hear one or two people ruckussing at their belongings, throwing papers, plastics, down off their beds and into new bags. She opened her eyes to see them doing just that.
She was watching them unknowingly until the door opened discretly.
"Oh good! You're up," He glanced to Rose and then looked to the others. "Mornin' Mr. Coagan" A boy said in a bit of tennessee country accent. Rose sat up crosslegged on her bunk bed, and shook her fingers a little to wake them up.
"Morning boys,.. and girl. Breakfast in two hours." Rose looked at Mr. Coagan confusedly,
"Oh, sweetheart, I will get you a sheet of the routine here at Darkingsford, just so you know what's up". "Darkingsford?" She questioned, but Mr. Coagan had already walked out of the room.
"Yeh'. That's the name of the bloody hellhole. You think its all nice and cosay' but just wait until we start activitays'." The hillbilly boy spoke again.
"Really? Wait, activities?"
"Yeah, you know, like cadet and army stuff, you'll get used to it"
Rose frowned in her spot. Cadets? Army stuff? What had she be put in for?
All the boys were starting to open their eyes now. Before long it was time to get ready. Mr. Coagan brang in the paper he'd promised and her new uniform, along with a backpack. The uniform was olive green with cameoflage covered on it apart from the pockets. The backpack was black with a torch, water bottle, rope, dried fruit packet and book in it. The book had written on it: 'Pure Cadet Skills: Surviving in the Outback.' Rose sunk.
She flipped through the book to find ways of tying rope, and how to create fire, etc. When she dug deeper she found metal bolts and buckles.
"Is this what everyone has?" She asked.
"Yeah, oh, no, you'd probably be like the first girl to ever do this."
"Girl?" Rose was horrified. "What do the girls normally do?"
"Girly stuff. All the do all day is make new uniforms, help clean up, do their activities."
"I thought you said girls don't do activities." Rose was intrigued, what was this place.
"No, they don't. They do this kinda thing where they just do rock climbing, swimming survival, all that, none of what we do."
Rose started getting a little agitated. "What we do?" She questioned.
"Trust me, you don't wanna know". She stared blanky at the guys.
Reece just sat on his bed fiddling with his fingers. She wondered what his problem was, he was so uninviting, so unfriendly, it bothered her, as it was really unusual compared to the other boys.
Before long it was time for breakfast.
There were tables full of different foods, none of what Rose liked. She sat down at the table of boys as all the girls were turning around, pointing at her, maybe laughing, talking, she couldn't differ the two. She self-conciously sat in dispair as everyone started gonbling down their meals. "What are you doing? Eat, quick, we don't have another feed until tonight!"
