The Arrival
Nearly ten years ago...
There were too many people. Just too many people in this city.
Every inch of the land was held up by people. Everywhere.Down. Up. Right. Left. Mind the freaking theft.
Too many people. Too many eyes. Too many ways to die.
At least the comfort was nothing would try to kill me in front of everyone. That would be grave offense and would be penalised as death.
My bags were heavy, and they weren't half the luggage I had brought with me. They were currently being loaded into the Volvo I had rented and each passing second, its driver was shooting me wary glances. I ignored him and the stares everyone was showering all of the sudden in my direction.
It wasn't like I was looking out of place. I was dressed in black, that's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
I shot a glanced behind me and then beside, worried that I may ignore slightest of the movements which would result in my entombment. Finally the driver managed to haul everything and then some more into the truck in front and I pushed myself into the Volvo without saying any word. The truck rode ahead and the car followed.
The driver slowly crossed from the lane and drove peacefully for a few minutes before just like any noisy human being, looked back at me and asked, "Not a crowd's fan, are you?"
"I am in fact." I shot back with pressed lips.
The driver raised his brows, "You dress like that every time or are you into those long faring biker's gang."
I glared at him, feeling offended; not that bikers weren't good. In fact they were the only clan of people I would appreciate to toggle with. I replied, "Just threw whatever I could."
"So why are you here in the city?"
To run away from everything, I replied mentally. While I spoke out, "I am here to join the residential program of Edenbrook. I just graduated from Med School."
The driver gaped, "You are a doctor?!"
"What does it look like, an assassin on run?" I deadpanned. And winced because I was nearly so close to mark.
He laughed, "You a doctor? I thought you wear those white coats and glasses."
"Anyone can wear that. Doesn't make them a doctor."
He swerved left and my eyes scanned the streets in the morning hour. I had been to Boston a couple of times and everytime, its nothing new. This was a huge city on the sea side not too far away from New York. I was worried about the nearness to NYC but shook that thought off my mind because it wouldn't be a great deal until the end of time. End of my time until and unless someone was really twisted in mind to awaken a force they couldn't fight.
Boston was a wyvern wind of thoroughfare. Every street leading to another and then another and kept on going. It was so different from Orleans where everything was straight forward. Stay away from the alleys and stick to the crowd.
The driver didn't speak until he neared the land my apartment was located. I had purchased that condo without even having an inspection in person but I had no time. And I had to manage with whatever I would be getting. The neighbourhood here looked quiet and clean. The buildings were polished end to end as if almost all the richer Boston population had planted their seeds at the same time side by side here. The area had a subway route but one had to walk a kilometre to reach there. There was comparatively less frequent traffic which rendered it hospitable given the current circumstances.
