The interns were gathered around the room in a relaxed circle. I hardly recognised any of their names, except for Dr. Emery since she had made me witness her puerile and unprofessional behaviour yesterday. I sent a scowl in her direction, making her lower her head on the floor. I heard her muttering something but shot it away like a useless fly.
These interns were assigned under Dr. Delarosa and Dr. Mirani, both of them, standing beside me with a long list of patients. Mirani was stiff and rather would not meet my eyes. His last mistake almost cost him the job and since we were the only two people aware of it, he perhaps kept it that way. I knew Mirani wasn't a bad doctor, he had talent and he had the passion to work through. But even the slightest of the mistakes had its price. It was better if he was ready to face a situation like this in future.
It was the second day for these interns and the real business began today. Rounds.
An essential component of a doctor's daily schedule. The patients which were assigned yesterday, a bunch of them were selected for presenting them to their senior residents and as if the hell had rained upon them--to me.
Interns were paired in teams of two, with each given a single patient to present for the rounds. Naveen in the morning had insisted to be the one supervising this but I firmly denied. I knew Naveen would always go soft for these bunch of wildlings which was totally unnecessary. They won't learn. They won't just learn at all.
"Why the hell are we waiting?" I asked sharply to Dr. Delarosa who was frowning at her pager. Hearing my question, she deepened her frown and replied,
"We have one intern missing. I have paged her to arrive." A raise of her dark brows, "She must be lost again."
Again? Couldn't this intern just had looked at the gigantic map framed over the entrance?
The door of the room was pushed open and a hesitant figure stepped inside. At once, everyone turned to look at the intern who had arrived late. But I turned my attention to my watch. I had other places to be...mostly because I had to get that result from the lab of the blood I had analysed yesterday. Of Naveen's.
Dr. Mirani barked, "Since now all you Hollywood leagues are here, we will begin your first rounds today."
Dr. Delarosa erased the frown on her face and pasted the ever cheerful expression, "Today we have a special guest....Good morning Dr. Ramsey!"
All the pair of eyes went to my figure. But a disturbance was caught from the corner of my eyes. I scanned in that direction to find an intern grabbing a surprised Dr. Turner from behind the crowd. Then all the gazes swung in her direction. She blushed under everyone's eyes and stared back to the front from her long lashes.
I jerked my attention back to the crowd, "Let's see who the interns are going to kill today."
Shuffling of feet followed as the interns looked at each other, with nervousness and pale excitement written over their faces. This was a very important segment. First impressions were always the last impression and hence, if these bunch of juvenile jejune failed...let's hope it wouldn't come around to that.
"Why does he has to be a jerk?" the faint whisper of the calamity herself was caught by my hearing receptors. I steely fixed my eyes in her direction as her gaze met mine making her stagger a few steps. But as usual she kept her chin high. Of all the interns here in the room, of course she had to be the one catching the attention, one way or other.
Well...she asked a good question Ethan, why you are being such a jerk?
I flipped that question away and addressed her, "Anything to say, Dr. Turner?"
