Over the night, we had driven into Missouri. After driving a while, we reached a large city, and just in time too. The truck was entirely empty. I pulled up to a gas station and exited the car. As Josh pulled up behind me, I asked for one of the kitchen knives. Then I cut the line to the gas pump and filled my trucks tank.
Angela and Nick wasted no time at all in the back of the truck. The raced around town picking up sheet metal. They looked like children on Christmas morning. I couldn't help but laugh. Josh walked around the gas pump to me.
"That girl in the back, the one with the light brown hair..." Josh began.
"Emilee or Miranda?" I asked.
He looked to his car and pointed.
"Oh Emilee, yeah, what about her?" I asked.
"She doesn't look so good, almost sick." Josh seemed concerned.
I looked at her, then back to Josh. "Maybe we should stop to eat for a little while."
"Food is kind of running low. We didn't grab too much at our last stop." He folded his arms.
I looked at his car again. Then behind me. There was a small group of trees near a tall building. I walked over to Josh's police cruiser without speaking a word. I opened the door. "Hey Miranda," I began, "you wanna put that hunting rifle to good use?"
She smiled and grabbed one of her two rifles. She made her way out of the car and over to the tree line I had pointed out. "You guys wanna walk around for a while?" I asked the rest. "We may be here for some time."
When my truck was finally full, I stepped back to look at it. Nick and Angela had built a large, sheet metal shield over the back end. It had two windows on each side and a sunroof, where with some jumper cables, they mounted Morgans machine gun.
I smiled. "Great work!"
"Thank you." Angela bowed. Nick just crossed his arms and scoffed. He climbed in the back of the truck.
Morgan was on top of the car with a rag, cleaning his gun. He had taken off his shirt and had a sleeveless tank top on. He rustled his hair and perched his cigar in his mouth. The muttered french rambles and puffed his cigar.
"Je t'aime, mon ami." He said, seductivly.
Sadie was sharpening a knife with a rock with her feet up in the front seat. Gavin was outside the car, stretching his legs and reloading his shotgun. Emilee and Kyra persisted to walk around. Josh and I talked about our plan to get to California.
After a few moments, we had filled up both gars with gas. Kyra had found a map in the gas station and gave it to us to chart our drive. We weren't the best at navigation, so being the backseat driver she is, she pointed out the best
route through the states.
We heard gunshots in the forest, and figured Miranda had shot something. Gavin and Morgan headed to go see if she needed help.
Everything was calm. No zombies. No giant insects or arachnids. No cracks or earthquakes. All was still. I wasn't sure if I trusted it.
Angela was over by the building, waiting for the others to emerge from the forest with their kill. There were more gunshots tho. More and more. Soon, Morgan came sprinting from the trees, shouting at us to start the cars. Behind him was Gavin. Eventually Miranda.
"What? What is it.!?" I asked Morgan who had stopped in front of me.
He was struggling to catch his breath. "Giant.... Giant... Zombie..."
"Giant zombie?" I asked.
"Giant zombie... Bear!" He shouted.
Just as he said this, branches burst out of the forest and a brown bear, at least ten foot tall burst through the tree line.
Its massive claw slashed through Angela's cheek. Angela had still been standing by the building. She hit the ground with blood drenching her face.
"Angela!" I looked over to the bear. The bear turned to her and bit at her leg.
Sadie was quick to climb up on Morgans machine gun and lay waste on the bear. The bear took off running into the forest.
I sprinted out into the street over to Angela. "No!" I shouted. "Damn it." She looked up at me. She was still alive but her skin was growing pale. I picked her up and carried her back to the truck. I put her in the back.
"Get Sam." I gestured to Josh. Sam came around and looked at Angela. She was terribly cut up and bloody.
Sam just stared. There was nothing anyone could do. Angela's skin just turned white. Whiter than paper. Whiter than snow. Her pupils enlarged and her eyes engulfed in black. She looked up to us, then she quivered her upper lip. She opened her mouth. Her teeth dripped with blood as she let out a massive roar.
Suddenly her head exploded. Gavin had blown it off with the shotgun. Blood had splatted on all of us. I wiped my face and began to cry.
"Damn it." I shook my head. "This isn't how its supposed to be."
Sadie put her hand on my shoulder. "Everyones gonna die eventually. She was one of the lucky ones. Got it over with quickly."
Josh walked up to me. "We should probably leave."
"Just give me a minute." I ran my hand through my hair.
Josh walked back to his car with Emilee, Miranda, Kyra, and Sam. Gavin entered the drivers seat of the truck with Sadie, and Nick and Morgan got in the back. I hugged Angela's body tightly, and blood from her head poured down my back. I asked for Morgans lighter, and I gathered a few branches from the trees. I lit the branches on fire and set them over Angela, then I got in the passenger seat of the truck, and we were off into the skyscraper district of the city.
