The radio alarm clock went off singing Jingle Bells until I was forced up, I stretch my arm out towards her; my eyes shot open the moment I realized she wasn't next to me.

Without hesitation I ran down the steps nearly breaking my neck, "Adeline! Adeline! Where are you?" I yelled.

She popped her head out from behind the kitchen wall. "What is it Cory?"

This day was going to drive me over the edge.

"Nothing honey, I just freaked out not finding you next to me."

"That's a bit dramatic. Did you think I got abducted?" She giggled from inside the kitchen.

"Oh, I love the tree babe thank you" she shouted as I made my way back up the steps holding onto the topper which I quietly removed from the cabinet.

Better safe then sorry.

While she prepared the meals listening to her favorite oldies I got into the shower trying not to think about the angel too much.

I dressed up in a white vest and black jeans pulling that hideous red reindeer sweater she had gotten for me a few weeks ago over my head. If I were going to please her I'd have to go all out.

The loud Christmas carols played on the radio could be heard from miles away sending shivers down my spine.

As I walked down with the topper in hand, she was waiting for me at the last step looking angelic wearing a white short lace dress. Her hair was pinned up perfectly exposing her breathtaking beauty.

She reached out her hand once she saw me holding onto the topper. My heart raced as I took the final step towards her.

I placed a kiss upon her forehead, the oven timer went off distracting her for a moment that's when I found the perfect opportunity to save the love of my life.

I walked towards the tree with a painful realization that the kiss I just placed on her forehead would be the last kiss I had ever placed on her soft delicate skin.

Would she ever forgive me for trading places?

Would she ever fall in love again?

I took that final step up the ladder as all the memories we had together flashed before my eyes. At least I left behind an explanation as to why I had placed the topper onto the Christmas tree instead of her in a little trinket under the Christmas tree.
