By the end of my shift I had learned a whole lot and met some really good people it seems. I was introduced to some of the guards that were relieving our shift and had a nice chat with them. We said our farewells to the new shift and started heading to the door. As we were all walking towards the door to leave I was having a small conversation about how my first day was with Dean. He offered to walk me to my car "Since it's a prison and all, I'd hate to see a prosperous rookie get hurt or lost," he explained.
"Oh no, I'm fine! Thank you, I'd hate to keep you from getting home to your wife and kids because of me - even if it is just a few minutes." I kindly declined.
"I could walk ya to your car if you'd like," Percy said walking closer to the two of us. We can't argue he was eavesdropping because he was literally two feet away. "That way Mr. Stanton here can get back to his family sooner like ya said, and you won't get lost!"
I watched as Brutus and Dean looked between each other and then to me as if they were silently saying 'are you sure?' and 'we can kick him in the shin if he's bothering you' with their eyes. "Sure, that would work just dandy" I said looking at Dean and Brutus with a scolding mothers look. The kid can't be that bad. Granted I've only been around him one day, and I'm sure being a woman has a whole different factor on how he behaves. We all said our farewells, the boys and Percy's weren't as genuinely friendly sounding and there I was, walking with Percy to my car.
We started making some small talk, about how my experience here was on my first day. We talked about some different work related topics as well. Nothing extravagant or highly detailed, there wasn't enough time with the short distance we had to walk.
"This is it, the hearty ol work truck. Life would be a lot more difficult if Charles hadn't bought me this truck - bless that sweet man" I said, and I noticed there was a slight shift in Percy's attitude.
"Oh..." Percy shifted, "Charles must be a good friend then?" He asked.
I let out a chuckle, "Yes, Percy, my uncle Charles is indeed a good friend of mine, don't worry big boy" I teased, bumping my shoulder into his arm. Now it was his turn to look like a tomato. He must not have expected the little spice I added at the end of my sentence. He let out a short cough while straightening his tie, "Oh". "Well I better be off now, I shouldn't hold you back from stealing hearts of the local Louisiana girls and worrying your lady" I joked.
"Well, I know with much of a charmer I am you'd be surprised that I haven't got a lady"
"Oh is that so?" I asked with a sarcastic and joking tone.
"Yes, it is so."
"Have you tried asking them out for dinner?" I poked at him, earning a grumpy 'really?' expression. "What!?" I laughed.
"Well I did ask a pretty lady today, but I was sadly rejected."
"Oh no that's not true, I said not the first day meeting someone. I'm not the type of girl to go out on dates every other day like most people our age do" I chuckled.
"And why's that?" Percy asked, eyebrow and curiosity raised.
"Well, Mr. Percy, I see dates as a way to fall in love, not be social and get a free meal or event just because of my gender." I explained, "Which is why I like to wait and see how the person is as themselves, and not trying to find a fling or something and act differently." I said getting in my truck and starting it.
"Oh... I get it" He said processing what I said and as I roll my window down, what you're saying is you're in love with me, you just don't know it yet" he jokes.
"Hah!" I laughed shutting my door "Well I can't confirm or deny that, so maybe so... with the way you keep on starin' at me with those chocolatey brown eyes I'd like to assume you've got a crush Mr. Percy"
Percy went beet red again and stammered his words, "Wh-What!? No, now - now I think you have this all mixed up"
"Well the little Mardi Gras going on down below says different"
"What!?" Percy freaked out looking down at his pants to see I was messing with him. Which is fine, because I didn't know he could turn that shade of red. "Now that ain't fair missy!" He said a bit embarrassed and with some attitude.
"No..." I grinned, "but I like to stay on top of things, especially when I get to poke fun." I said winking at staying on top of things. "Goodnight Percy, drive safely and I'll see you in the morning."
"Ah, yes, goodnight Ruth. You drive safe as well"
"I will, or maybe I'll crash into a gator, you never know" I laughed with him and then pulled out of my spot and headed home.
When I got home I was rather tired. Between moving, a new job, and a completely different climate put a bit of a toll on me. So I decided the best route to relax was make something quick and simple to eat and take a bath before heading off to bed. I still have to work again tomorrow morning. Bright and early at six in the morning. Gotta love it. Being a night owl and all. Yay. But hopefully I wake up well up rested and ready to go in the morning since I'll be going to bed early.
