AN: Hello! So this story may seem very long and slow, but I want this to be a good story where the relationships all build up in depth and all snazzy like. AND! If you're enjoying this story please comment if you enjoy it or not! I love hearing feedback and the group for The Green Mile fanfics isn't a very big group. Also. Might make a story for Brutus. Would ya like to read that too?

'Why would I ever agree to day shift. I hate mornings more than anything' I thought after my alarm went off. I had turned my alarm off and looked at the face of it to see that it was in fact 4 in the morning. My shift starts at 6:00 am, which is too early for criminals to be idiots. But it could be worse, I could have a shift that starts at 5:00 am or 4:00am. I did the normal thing anyone would do when they wake up - eat, put my uniform on, and get ready for work day ahead of me. It's just like any other day, except I put the most minimal makeup on, just some mascara really, and I put my hair up in a nice bun. I don't need to bring any more attention to myself if I make myself look more feminine if I'm surrounded by inmates. You know, the whole shebang. But once everything was done and taken care of it was time to head to work.
After a short scenic drive I arrived to work about 35 minutes early. 'Ahh. Perfect! Now I can make some fresh coffee and have a chat with last night's crew.' I headed into E Block, surprising the men inside.
"Oh! Ruth?! You realize you're working the morning shift not night shift, right?!" Harry said poking fun at me for being here so early.
"Oh, haaaa haaa Harry, I know what time it is, don't you worry your heart about that." I laughed. "I've always been one to be rather early no matter what the occasion. I like to say 'if you're early, you're on time, and if you're on time, you're late'". I smirked, walking past the desk where Harry and Dean were, going to the room with the coffee maker. I set my lunch box in the cubby with my name on it. The type of cubby you would find in a sports room for the players gear is the type of cubbies we had here in E Block since we had such few guards. It must've taken a few minutes to find all the stuff for the coffee - filters, coffee grounds, the only thing I didn't have to find was water and the damned machinery. As I was trying to figure out one central spot to put the coffee stuff I heard the door to come into E Block close followed by some voices. Sounded like Paul, Brutus, and Percy from what I could hear. I looked at my watch to see what time it was and it read 5:37am. I poured myself some coffee in a clean cup before heading out to the mile and the boys.
"Oh! She is here! For a second you had me going thinking you were some sort of mental patient saying she was here with no proof" Paul teased Dean.
"I told ya," Percy said arrogantly, "I saw here truck in the parking lot on my way in, but you didn't believe me".
"Well that's not the main focus for the shift, Now is it Percy?" Paul said looking to Percy, but shifting to me before he could speak, "Ambitious are ya? Dean and Harry here said you arrived at what, 5:25am?"
"Yes that's right, is there something wrong with me coming so soon?" I asked not wanting to break any rules.
"Oh, why of course not! I was just curious as to why you showed up 35 minutes early to an already early shift. Not many people will typically do that.""Well like I told Harry and Dean over here, I go by a saying that 'if you're early, you're on time, and if you're on time, you're late'...and I also wanted to make some fresh coffee for the lot of y'all" I explained taking a sip of coffee. Paul made some audible noises with a grin looking at between me and all the men. We all just shot a confused look to each other and then Paul. "Wow!" Paul said, "Percy! Take notes!" He finished before walking to the time clock. It left a cantankerous look in Percy's face. Clearly that didn't make him happy. Maybe he has been late a lot in the past? Can't be sure, but maybe they just like poking at Percy. Again, can't be entirely sure. Just have to go through this shift and see how the day pans out.
A few hours went by, nothing much going on aside from Paul going through some files in the office and me reading some of the standard operating procedures in the chair across from him. Percy and Brutus were out in the block watching the inmates, reading, filing papers and such. Paul excused himself from the office and I've caught on that he's got some trouble downstairs and the bathroom. Poor man. 'Must be extremely painful' I thought before turning to the second to last page in the folder with files Paul gave me.
"Hello Princess" I heard Percy say in the doorway behind me.
I set the papers down in my lap with one hand, since my other hand was busy lightly pinching the bridge of my nose. "I'm not a princess, Percy" I let out with a hint of agitation in my voice, picking up my papers to continue reading. But alas. I heard him walk closer. I already knew I wouldn't be able to read with him here talking to me. So I put the papers back down and turned to face him. "Yes, Percy?"
"Yes... you're right... you're not a princess..." he started.
"By God, Percy, if you say singing along the lines of 'you're not a princess, you're an angel, a queen, a goddess' or anything along the lines of that..." I said looking up to him, "I'm either going to punch you in the balls, or kick you in the balls"."Well that's no way to respond to someone...someone trying to compliment ya" he said a bit irritated.
"Why? I'm sure you've used that line a dozen times on countless other girls. I'm not the type of girl to swoon over good looks and over used and abused complements" I explained with a sigh.
"Oh, so what you're saying is that you think I look good?" He smirked, picking the one positive thing I let slip to be used to his advantage.
"Oh my golly, Percy!" I said standing up, looking up still since he's taller than I am, "I will admit, yes, I do". He smirked and went to say something, but I cut him off before he could speak, "But! There's more to a person than looks, Percy. There's the person's personality. The person's brain. The persons humor. The person's soul. " I said, taking a step closer to him, so I could squeeze past him and the chair to leave. "And the person's heart, most importantly" I said patting where his heart is, on top of his uniform with my hand while I took a step to the side to be closer to the door and not wedged between him and the chair.
"Well, I suppose those are excellent things. But what about someone's strengths, their prowess, their ability to get things done?" Percy asked. It's no doubt in my mind he was low key talking about himself. Maybe a sense of validation? No. Seems more like a young man trying to be big, bad, and impressive. I'll tango softly with my words with him I suppose. I do enjoy seeing other people happy.
I gave out a soft chuckle before looking up into his brown eyes. "Percy, if you're talking about yourself, I'm sure you're plenty strong. You've got a sturdy, well built frame. There's no doubt in my mind you are, just like there's no doubt in my mind you can get things done." I said. I could see a visible change in Percy. Pride? Confidence? That's what his body language gave off, he stood up a little taller and puffed his chest out, whether he knew he was doing it or not is beyond me. "But!" I said.
"But what!?" Percy quickly questioned, likely assuming I was about to criticize him.
"But," I chuckled at his quickness, " as far as I'm concerned, when it comes to this topic, what matters most is when two people love each other unconditionally. To one person they have 'flaws'. But their lover sees the other persons 'flaws' as...perfect imperfections." I said placing my files between my legs. "And if one can't do something, whether for themselves or others," I say, reaching up fixing Percy's very messy tie, "then the other person will do everything in their power to help the person they love most" I said looking back to Percy. "Make sense?"
"Well...yeah....yeah it does." He mumbled, looking to his tie and then me, who has been slowly taking steps towards the door. "Good!" I smiled before walking out the door and into the mile.
