Time Flies

Time flies when you first start a job. It seems as if this past three months went by in the blink of an eye. I hadn't seen Percy after my second shift earlier last week, between days off and opposite shifts. It was nice to have a break from the overly assertive lad. It was odd, he always seems to be cocky and arrogant when the boys are around. But tones it all down and tries to be a smooth talker whenever we were alone. The brain of a young male never ceases to amaze me.

However today is a different day at that. A special occasion that my uncle has decided to have for all the guards of E Block. We are all to meet at his house for lunch to thank the guards on death row for doing good and appreciate the work the boys have done. I can't say I've done much considering I've only been there for two weeks. Two floaters will be covering morning shift so the meal can happen at the wardens, and night shift will be the regular boys back at work.

I've actually been a major help in making some of the dishes since Aunt Melinda is feeling ill. My Uncle is the one left in charge of barbecuing. The chicken, corn on the cob, and some pork roast. This morning I made the sides. Potato salad, green beans, cooked carrots, baked beans, coleslaw, pies, and some sweet iced tea. I will say, although today is my day, off I had to be up extra early to make enough for everyone and to have it all done in time for lunch. It's as if I didn't have a day off! Days like this are always worth it though. I'm just glad I decided to make the pies yesterday instead of doing them this morning.

'Golly! I wouldn't have even been able to go to bed last night!' I thought, putting the last of the pies in my truck before I head over to my aunt and uncles. Being late to dinner or anything with food and gatherings is almost like a sin in my family. What can I say? We're just a bunch of people who love food.

The set up ended up being timed perfectly! The time I got there, helped set the tables outside, and bring all the food out. Even the meat Uncle Hal had been times almost perfectly. 'It's the small things in life' I chuckled to myself getting excited over time management.

First Paul showed up, followed by Brutus and Dean, then Harry, and soon they all were here. Uncle Hal kept it as just the guards. Normally he would've invited the boys ladies as well, but the cost of food for twice the amount of people during a depression would be a lot more costly. I'm sure Aunt Melinda also appreciates the fact that there's not as many people given she's been feeling ill. I was getting the pies in the oven to warm them up when she decided to go outside for a bit and socialize. But she quickly decided to go back inside and take a nap. 'Thank God, she hasn't been getting much sleep from what Uncle Hal says' I think, bringing two pitchers of sweet tea outside where the men were all having a chat.

They all looked odd, at least to me, not wearing uniforms. 'Hell, I must look a lot different to them' I chuckled to myself. I noticed most of the lads do double takes.

"Morning lads! Hope your days have been going good!" I smiled, seeing the pitchers down on the tables, receiving a bunch of good mornings and greetings back.

"Ah, Ruth! Would you like any help bringing anything else out?" Brutus offered to help.

"Oh thank you Brutus!" I smiled, "The only thing left is to wait for the pies, and cut a watermelon my uncle got for the occasion".

"Ooooooooh! Pieeeees!" Harry licked his lips in a comedic fashion, "What've you got in there Ruth?"

"Two of my pecan pies, two apple pies, and I also made two cheesecakes for everyone to share!"

"Christ almighty!" Brutus chuckled, "are you feeding an army?"

"Shhh" I tried stifling a laugh and smirking, "Maybe I am, maybe I'm not"

"Oh! I don't care if she is! More for me!" Harry laughed.

I noticed Dean and Percy were over were the vehicles were parked. Looks like they were talking about car stuff? That was my guess since they were pointing out different things on one of the cars. Brutus and Harry were sitting down having a talk at the table already. Uncle Hal, Paul, and the older gent who is in charge of the switch during executions were by the grill having a chat. 'Hmmmm. What's that man's name!' I thought. 'Oh well! I'll remember soon enough!'

I turned to head back inside for other things when I remembered that cutting watermelons are not my best skill. 'Maybe I can get Brutus to help' I stopped and looked at Brutus.
"Uhhhh, yes?" He asked amused.

"Okay, would you be sweet enough to help me cut that watermelon? All the years I've tried cutting them it just never...works out so to say" I smiled sheeplike causing Brutus to laugh.

"Of course," he smiled, "lead the way young lady!"

Brutus was a MAJOR help with that watermelon. I'm strong but he's just big and born with more strength than I'll ever have. Makes watermelon cutting a breeze!

He ended up helping me carry two pitchers of water out while I carried the watermelon bowl out to the table. I noticed Dean was now sitting next to Harry and Percy was sitting on the end facing them, away from were the two of us were coming. Paul was sitting two seats to his left. I'd assume the older officer and Uncle Hal would be the ones sitting at the ends of the table. Leaving a set open between Percy and Paul, or one next to Dean and the end seat.

I set the bowl of watermelon down on the table next to Percy, giving him a quick glance and smile. He seemed to be surprised seeing me in a dress and not a uniform. Brutus then went to each end of the table and put a pitcher of water down.

"The barbecue looks great Uncle Hal!"
"It's years of practice dear!" He gave a small smile after letting out some cigar smoke, taking the last of the meat off of the grill onto a plate. As he came over to take a seat, everyone still standing took a seat. Since I was already there, I sat between Paul and Percy. Brutus next to Dean, and Hal and the other man at the ends.

"Ooo hooo ho hooooooh! Does this mean we can take the towels off the bowls and chow down Hal?"

"Yeah, Jack, that's kinda of the point of having lunch isn't it?" My uncle poked at him with a small smile. But finally, I know his name!
