Castiel hated working in the coffee shop. He hated every second of dealing with rude and obnoxious hipster customers and clearing up their mess. Why would people order a cappachino and then scrape the froff off the top of it? Why not just order a damn latte where its all coffee and milk with only a centimetre of froff on top? Ergh, he hated working there so much but at the end of the day, Castiel needed the money so he could pay for food. He only worked at the coffee shop part time because the rest of the time he was in lectures or was studying to become a doctor but whenever he thought about work and his shifts he would rather bash his head against the wall of his one bedroomed student flat.
It wasn't that bad though, especially the night shifts. The coffee shop was open until very late in the evening and when Castiel got to do night shifts he also got to bring in his university work and revise for the next upcoming exam as it was so quiet on a night. Castiel was working a night shift tonight. 9pm to 5am. Not that bad, he didn't have lessons in the morning and he could just stay up all night and revise, only serving a trucker or some nocternal weirdo that likes to move around in the dark when necerssary. He enjoyed the night shift a lot more then the day shift because he could actually hear if someone spoke to him, whereas in the day time the store was so packed that he couldn't hear a single thing that anyone was saying. When he got it, the manager handed him the keys and got her bag to go home. She wished him luck like she always does before leaving the coffee shop in the hands of the 19 year old boy. He didn't know why the manager trusted him to work this shift by himself but he was happy that she did. He liked to be trusted to do things like this because it made him feel better about how he coped with life. If people could trust him, he was fine.
Castiel slipped on his apron and stood behind the counter, making himself a hot mocha coffee just so he could stay away the whole night. He steamed the hot chocolate and mixed the coffee and the hot chocolate together before adding cream on top. He smiled at his work before taking a gulp of it and smacking his lips together. Not bad. Could do with some caramel syrup though. When his drink was finally finished he leaned on the counter and pulled out his university book in which he had to read by tuesday, today was friday. He skimmed through the pages easily until he heard the door bell chime and a customer walk in. It was a trucker, one of the regulars so he smiled at the man and asked him what he would like.
"Just a black coffee, please." The trucker said in a gruff voice, taking off his hat and placing it off the counter.
"Long day?" Castiel asked him and the trucker grunted.
"Like you wouldn't believe. Not only that but my so called friend has dropped off his two sons at my house so i gotta go home and look after 'em."
"Why'd he leave them at yours? If you don't mind me asking that it." Castiel asked politely and the trucker just chuckled and shook his head.
"Because their father is a no good, dirty rotten man who only cares about himself. Them two boys deserve better then him."
"I'm sorry to hear it." Cas says and the trucker just nods and takes the black coffee from his hand before paying him and walking back out of the coffee shop.
"See ya." He says before he leaves and Cas gives him a little wave. Castiel liked hearing stories of people, the stories that they mutter out at 10 at night, after a long day at work. The stories that shape who they are and the stories that are happy, or sad or even tragic. Any kind of story does Castiel, he loved hearing about them which is also another reason why Castiel liked working the late shift. He liked talking to people he wouldn't usually talk to on a day to day basis, getting to know their story.
An hour came and went, slowly drifting into two hours and then three with only a number of customers coming in and ordering take away drinks. One or two ordered one to stay in but they didn't stay for too long, only gobbling down some cake or another and gulping down their coffee before heading off again. It was lonely, sure, but Castiel loved it. He loved the peace and quiet just as much as hearing about peoples backstories. He hated working, but he didn't althogether mind working the graveyard shift. He could get stuff done.
