Thank you for taking the time to open this novella. There are a lot of excellent stories on Wattpad and I am honored that you elected to take a peek at this one.
This novella is an entry for the Open Novella Contest (ONC) 2020. There were a lot of good prompts, but number seven stood out to me the most. It reads:
A drug deal gone horribly wrong leads to a youngster being wrongly convicted, and to have to learn very quickly how to survive life in a juvenile prison.
I saw this and got ridiculously excited. Seeing as I was permitted to adjust the prompt moderately, I shifted it to adult prison.
Why that particular prompt?
I spend 10 hours a day, 5 days a week inside the steel and cement building that is Lebanon Correctional Institution (LeCI). This affords me the opportunity to tell some of the stories inside those walls. Scroll down further, you'll see actual images of the central corridor, a housing unit, and a cell.
The characters in this novella are not based off of any individual person I've met. Rather, they're bits and pieces of the men I speak to in my practice. They're human, first and foremost. I think that's what I want to portray most through writing this.
Not everyone is innocent, like Alex. Some have done unspeakable things, like Colt. They're loud, gruff, and sometimes creepy. The language you will encounter in this novella reflects that.
Ye be warned.
Of course, I can't write something without incorporating romance. Because I love romance – reading, writing, watching, I don't care. I'm sappy like that.
