In the living room, it looked like a LAN party, and together with Rob, Misha, Jensen, and Matt, Gabriel played a computer game for the third night in a row that had mesmerized each of the men. Granted, it looked weird to see middle-aged men with headsets, fingers moving wildly on the keys, eyes fixed on the screen, shouting orders to each other.
The game required everyone's full attention for up to forty-five minutes –– one couldn't pull yourself away, let alone blink, for a chance of winning ... since there was no pause button.
At first, Samantha had smiled, but the smile quickly faded, and at this point, there was only an annoying head shake before climbing the stairs and sneaking into the bedroom. But what should he do?
"Don't leave the formation!"
"Damn, many goblins, throw a grenade, Matt!" Jensen shouted, pounding on the keyboard like crazy.
"They come from all sides ... that's a trap!" Gabe screamed hysterically and automatically closed his eyes. The one who would've seen would've called them idiots.
Rob and Matt were no longer there the following evening, but the other three didn't stop playing. They sat on the couch and articulated with their hands and feet.
Samantha was traveling with a friend so she wouldn't have to face the noise level for longer than necessary.
"Why didn't you gimme any backing?" Gabriel groaned, annoyed, and looked at his lifeless body on the screen.
"We only did you a favor. Did you see Sam's gaze yesterday?" Misha giggled, thrusting him into the side.
The men put the laptops aside and leaned back.
"At some point, she'll punish you because the virtual world is more important to you than she is. Someone has to keep an eye on you."
"There ain't been anything for a long time. I'm just a good husband," Gabe said with a smirk.
"Do you wanna challenge it? I can spank you too," Jensen laughed and slapped him so hard on the thigh that the older man jerked briefly.
"Would you like to ..." Gabe replied and stuck out his tongue, "... but she's too lax in her punishment anyway. I can stand much more."
"Don't let her hear that," Misha giggled.
As everyone sat with their backs to the door, no one noticed that Samantha had been home for a long time. A loud bang as she threw the door, and everyone turned around in shock.
"Honey! H-how long have you been standing there?!"
Any color had gone from his face, and Gabriel tried in vain to swallow the thick lump in his throat because he suddenly realized that he'd rather not have said the last words.
"Guys," the young woman greeted the three men before going up the stairs without another word.
"It was nice to have known you," Jensen said, standing up.
"I don't wanna hear it, the I-have-told-you-so's," Gabe grunted as Misha kissed his cheek.
In Gabriel's head whirled a lot of thoughts, and he wondered if it wouldn't be better to sleep here on the couch, but then he gave himself a kick in the butt and switched off the light before regretfully going up the stairs into the bedroom.
Sam came out of the shower and slipped under the covers. She wasn't angry; instead, she liked the thought of taking her husband firmly in hand.
The fact that he kept asking for it showed her that he liked it. Still, she'd let him fidget a bit because he deserved it.
