Marissa POV:

We were just getting back from Spring Break. I was so happy, I needed a break from my family so badly. They are so religious, they sent me to an all-girls catholic school even though I went to a public middle school. Also, they told me not to work over the break which made it so much worse. My work is tutoring middle and high school students, mostly in math. I do it every day after school.

Today, I was preparing to work with middle schoolers until my boss said she wanted me to work with a junior who was struggling in Pre-Calc. I normally didn't like working with high schoolers, especially if I knew them. I looked up and - it was Maihua Lee. Maihua.... she was my first "crush". I don't know if you can even call it that, you know I mean she's a girl and we were kids. Wow... She had gotten more beautiful since the last time I saw her. Her hair was short now, curly and black and perfe--- I couldn't think like that.  "Hey, Maihua. You're working with me today."

"Oh cool! I haven't seen you in a while. Not since 8th-grade graduation, right? I didn't know you worked here," She responded.

"Yeah, I started this year. How are you?" Seeing Maihua brought back all these memories from my childhood. We met when we were 5, and we were inseparable for a few years. So close that... we had a plan to marry each other. She had proposed to me using a ring made from green pipe cleaners. At that time, gay marriage was not legal in all of America so we researched states where we could get married. This was when we were 7 or 8. We decided we would travel to Maryland (We live in North Carolina) and get married there. I barely even knew what marriage was, but I knew I wanted to marry her.

Then, my mom heard about our plan. I didn't even know what a lesbian was at that point, but my mom sat me down and said that marrying another woman, being a lesbian, was a sin and I would go to hell. She stopped organizing playdates with me and Maihua. We saw each other at school sometimes, but our friendship got lost in the 300 people in our grade. By 8th grade, we barely knew each other. She had probably forgotten all about our little deal because I knew she was out, and she had dated other girls. She was the closest I'd ever gotten to dating a girl but I wasn't even a part of her love stories.

Maihua POV:

I wonder if Marissa is straight. Seeing her after so many years made me remember that we thought we were going to get married someday, when we were in elementary school. I always thought she might not be straight after that. But anyways I had just gotten out of a bad relationship. I really did need some help on Pre-Calc, though. "So, this is my homework. Do you have any idea what is happening because I have no fucking clue!"

She rolled her eyes: "Omg Maihua, you never were good at math. That's ok I can help you. So you see here, this is the unit circle and it can show you......" I couldn't focus on her words. I looked up at her, explaining passionately something I could never bother to care about. She tucked her hair behind her ear and all of a sudden I realized I had missed her. We hadn't talked in years but I wanted to talk to her so bad. Maybe I could ask her to hang out? No that would be weird. I didn't know what to do.

"Maihua are you even listening to me??"
