Marissa POV:
"Maihua are you even listening to me??" She was just staring off into space... or at me. I didn't know. Whatever, it didn't matter.
"I am but I just hate math! I don't get it" She sat up quickly. She was fidgeting with her chain, which I just noticed. It was really cute, not that I was paying attention to stuff like that. "Hey so, do you want to catch up sometime?" She was looking down and didn't meet my eye when she said that. "I just think it's weird that we haven't talked in so long". She looked up at me and smiled a little, with a look that I couldn't refuse.
"I mean yes! I still can't believe my parents sent me to a different high school from all of you." She made me nervous and I didn't know why. I was scared of hanging out with her because I knew my mom would get mad if she found out, and I was scared of this feeling about her growing.
"Well, I wouldn't mind going to an all-girls school that's for sure!" She laughed and then cleared her throat awkwardly. "Just because, well, you know I'm lesbian right? I mean I know your parents are really religious and I think you might have known in 8th grade but I'm all officially out right now and I don't know if your parents ---"
"Dude, it's fine. My parents have their beliefs and I have mine." She was babbling so I tried to comfort her. I didn't know what to say though, because she knew my mom and she knew how homophobic she was.
Maihua POV:
Marissa didn't seem to agree with her parents, but she was weird about it. I didn't know what that meant - could it mean what I thought? Maybe she wasn't straight? Or maybe she was and she actually did agree with her parents. I decided to ask her, "Are you going to tell your mom if we hang out?"
"NO."
"Ok. Um, well, I think I have your number. I'll text you, ok?" I got up to leave because my heart was pounding.
"Wait Maihua it's only been 10 minutes! You paid for one hour so you've got to learn some stuff!" She smiled at me and made me feel like everything was all right. It all felt so simple in her smile - she was so pure.
Marissa POV:
When I got home, I texted my best friend Natalie about Maihua.
-do u remember maihua? guess -
-what she came to tutoring -
-today. it's so weird to see her! -
-no way omg. i don't have any -
-classes with her but did u know -
-she's lowkey tiktok famous lol -
I went to look up Maihua's tiktok right away. She had 70k followers! I scrolled onto her page and clicked on one of her videos. She winked at the end - I felt heat creeping up my face as I blushed, my cheeks so red. How could she make me feel that way?

Hi! Just to clarify things, this is when Maihua was 17. She had a following on Tiktok but nothing near what she has today, and Marissa just learned about it in this chapter.
