Maihua POV:
As her mom dragged her away, I could hear her yelling at Marissa. "MARISSA! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WOULD DO THIS!" I slowly stood up. I was completely helpless. "You know you are never allowed to meet with a boy without telling me! What were you going to do with him if I didn't interrupt??!" My jaw dropped. Marissa looked back and me and gave me a small smile - everything was going to be alright.
I couldn't believe it - her mom thought I was a boy! Normally I get annoyed when people misgender me. It happens a bunch, especially on Tiktok. But now, I was just happy Marissa is going to be safe. I didn't know what would happen though, because her mom was clearly mad about her having a boyfriend. And if her mom wanted to meet me, I didn't think I could pretend to be a boy no matter how much I cared for Marissa. But our relationship was moving moment by moment, and this was a win at the moment.
I knew what happened was serious, but I couldn't stop smiling. Every kiss we had was even more magical than the last. I had butterflies in my stomach that wouldn't stop flying.
Marissa POV:
I looked back at Maihua and smiled. I almost wanted to faint with relief. I knew there would still be problems with my mom, but nowhere near what I thought.
"Drive straight home! I'll talk to you when we are back."
----------------------- 10 minutes later ------------------------
"Marissa, I'm very disappointed in you. Why would you do this? Besides, I always let you out with Mark. Why wouldn't you just ask me?" My mom was standing right in front of me while I sat on the couch.
"I'm sorry Mom. I guess... I just wasn't sure. You've known Mark for a long time and you don't know...him... so I didn't know what you would say." I couldn't meet her eyes.
She sat down next to me. "Honey, I understand. To be honest, I'm happy that you were kissing a boy. I never saw you kiss Mark and the whole relationship felt a little more like a friendship than anything. It made me very concerned that you were........ but you're not. I'm glad."
"That I was what, Mom?"
"Nothing. You aren't. And you never will be."
"Mom just tell me, I'm confused." I wanted to see if her views on gay people had changed since I was a kid. I hadn't heard her talk about it in a while.
"Gay. It would have been bad."
"Oh. Right. Would that be so bad?"
She stood up, alarm in her eyes. "Marissa how could you say that you would go to hell. You aren't gay!!!"
"No I know Mom, you saw me with a boy, I just meant I don't know what would be so bad about it." I tried to reassure her.
"Good. Keep it that way. If you were gay, you wouldn't be my daughter." She started to walk away as if it was just routine to say that. But my blood was boiling. I couldn't handle this anymore. I didn't want to hide myself and Maihua anymore.
"Then I'm not your daughter." I stood up and got ready to meet her eyes. She wasn't going to bully me. She froze for a moment with her back against me. Slowly, she turned around, her face stone-cold.
"Be very careful what you say, Marissa" Her voice was low and tense. She was challenging me. I could back down. She would forget about it if I backed down right now because she would rather ignore it than admit it. Too bad. She wasn't going to be able to ignore me.
"You know the boy you just saw me with? That's actually a girl. A girl I really like. And the only problem in our relationship has been with you."
"You're out of your mind Marissa. Stop talking." I thought she would be freaking out by now, but I guess she was still trying to ignore it.
"MOM! Listen to me. I'm falling in love with a girl, and there's nothing you can do."
"She's not gay. SHE'S NOT GAY. That was a boy." She started talking to herself. "There's time to change this. It's a phase. She won't be like this forever." She turned back to me. "You are forbidden from seeing her. From seeing anyone. You're grounded."
"You can't control me, Mom. I'm going to see her." I grabbed my keys and walked out the door.
Maihua POV:
I was lying on my bed, thinking about whether or not I should text Marissa. I decided to wait a little and see if she texted me, just in case her mom was checking her phone. I heard the doorbell ring. "I'll get it!" yelled Gaonha. A few seconds later, she yelled again to me. "Maihua... it's for you." As I was getting out of bed, Marissa walked in, looking like an angel she was smiling so much.
"Hey! How did you get away from your mom? I can't believe she thought I was a boy, it's so lucky isn't it? Is that why you're so happy?"
She sat down next to me and looked at me, still smiling. She kissed me on the cheek and grabbed my hands. "I came out to her."
"What!! Wait why? How did she react? Oh my god, I'm so proud of you." I pulled her into a hug and we held each other for over a minute. She nestled her head in my shoulder and clung to me before releasing and explaining.
"I just didn't want to have to lie about you being a boy. I wanted her to know that I'm... falling in love with someone and it's a girl and I wasn't going to be afraid of her anymore."
"I think that girl is falling for you too."
"I sure hope so!" We both laughed.
"That took so much courage, wow." She leaned in and kissed me, as passionate as ever.
"You gave me the courage. I'll never forget that."
"I don't know what is going to happen. She was almost in shock I think. She's definitely mad. I wanted to give her some time to cool off and think about it. Um... Would it be ok if I stayed the night?"
"Uh yeah yeah of course." I sounded so dumb, but I couldn't help it. I really was falling for her.
