A pleasant surprise

That summer, your parents had decided to enroll you in acting classes; They figured that it would be a nice surprise since they had noticed that you had an interest in the dramatic arts.

The first time they had noticed was when they brought you and your siblings to Walt Disney World on a family vacation during March break. You being 12, a pre-teen, going to a kid's amusement park wasn't your idea of fun; You hated being obligated to follow your younger twin brothers on toddler rides in the scorching heat for hours.

But on one late afternoon, there had been a live showing of Sleeping Beauty at the castle and Maleficent's character had bewildered you.

You watched the costumed actress take the stage, indulging fear in the younger audience. When she spoke, all was quiet. She delivered her dialogue powerfully, leaving you starstruck. You envied her for being on that stage, envied her talent, envied the attention.

After the show, you could meet Maleficent and either take a picture with her or get her autograph; You stood in line cheekily with your dad, while your mom stayed with the twins at the mickey mouse ice cream stand. Your whole attitude on Disney had changed.

You got to meet Maleficent and take a picture with her. You were standing close to your idol, feet clad in flashy yellow crocs, decorated with various jibbits. You wore plaid pink and white shorts, matched with a blue zip-up hoodie, a huge smile on your face, showing your now-adult teeth. She wore her signature smug grin with half-opened eyes.

You still have that picture today.

A 23-year-old actor named Chris Evans was the one who taught the class, he was a local, and everyone loved him. Waiting for the first class to begin, you were seated with a dozen other kids, all a little younger than you, on the stage floor of the Theatre.

"Alright! Listen up guys," He stood in front of you all, clapping his hands to get everyone's attention. The children silenced.

"Can anybody tell me what is theater?" He spoke.

Multiple kids rose their hands eagerly.

Chris pointed.

"Theater.. uhh.. is when you act on stage and show a story to people who watch. "A petite blonde girl with pigtails shyly replied.

"That is correct, Abygail! And what is an actor, what does it do?" He added.

"An actor is the person who plays a person in the story. He talks like the person and moves like him." She replied.

"Yes. Good." Chris paused momentarily.

"Do any of you play pretend at home?" He asked.

The children nodded excitedly.

"Well, acting is the professional word to say that you're playing pretend. If I say, let's pretend we're pigs, how would we look like?" Chris theatrically rose an eyebrow.

The kids all got on their hands and knees and began to squeal and grunt like farm pigs; You were doing it as well, but feeling a little embarrassed because there was no one else of your age there. Your movements were rigid, a little awkward, you quietly 'oinked' with the others.

Chris stopped the class. "Very good!  What we just did there was some acting! We all acted like pigs. You can act as whoever or whatever you want, that's the beauty of theatre, everyone can have a role. "

You had gone to multiple lessons that summer. Every Tuesday from noon to 4 Chris taught you and the class, you did like it but you felt really shy around the younger kids. Sometimes, you felt like crying because you felt alone on that big stage even though it was crowded with kids. The ages ranged from toddlers to 10-year-olds who really didn't have the same maturity as you did.
